Also wound up dehydrated as even water made me cry with pain to drink.

Are you propping your bed up? This can really help you. Stops the acid creeping up your oesophagus.

Try drinking some peppermint tea as well.

Twinklemegan · 11/06/2008 23:24

Oh God - heartburn. The third worst thing about pregnancy after labour and SPD. I used to "sleep" propped bolt upright on 3 or 4 pillows and even that didn't help. That Gaviscon is ghastly and I'm not sure if it helped or not - I certainly swigged a lot of it. Did anyone else get horrendous burping as well (only at night thank God)? It was so so embarrassing I can't bear to think about it now.

ravenAK · 11/06/2008 23:27

Gaviscon didn't work for me (& made me feel incredibly sick!) but any old supermarket Rennie equivalent did.

3 super-hairy babies here!

Twinklemegan · 11/06/2008 23:30

What's this link with hairy babies?! DS did have a fair amount of hair when he was born, but not unusually so.

misdee · 11/06/2008 23:30

its an old wives tale twinklemegan, that if you have bad heartburn your baby will be hairy.

OP posts:
misdee · 11/06/2008 23:31

mine didnt just have a huge crop of hair of their heads, they had black hair all over. dd1 had hair all the way down to her eyebrows, over her tips of ears, her back and butt. dd2+3 were the same but no hairy foreheads.

OP posts:
Twinklemegan · 11/06/2008 23:32

Ah yes, I remember now - thought you meant the Gaviscon lol. Is it just hairy on the head, or hairy all over...

Twinklemegan · 11/06/2008 23:32

You got there before me.

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 23:37

dd1 had a head full of hair, but it was only on her head.

dd2, heartburn just as bad. BALDY!

sweetkitty · 12/06/2008 07:44

misdee - you can buy Zantac in any old supermarket right next to the Gaviscon, bloody expensive though then you don't need to justify it to a pharmicist. Honestly one tablet lasts all day great relief.

saltire · 12/06/2008 08:07

Misdee - Boots do their own brand of Zantac, its cheaper. you will find it amongst the indegestion remedies, and bigger packs behind the counter. DH uses them and says they are just as effective as the proper Zantac. I ahd really bad heartburn with DS1 and he was really hairy, had his first haircut at about 12 weeks, it was really darka nd long!

Have you tried maalox(sp?) I took that when PG as Gaviscon made me vomit, it was really good. its more chalky, a bit like Milk of Magnesia.

theSuburbanDryad · 12/06/2008 08:34

Peppermint capsules + milk worked well for me as Rennie and Gaviscon both made me puke!!

Hope you're feeling better now misdee. xx

Elibean · 12/06/2008 09:03

expat how awful, poor you. Makes me feel sick just thinking about that degree of heartburn and no proper meds.

Hope you feel better today, misdee.

misdee · 12/06/2008 09:11

am feeling better today, but being up l;ate with heartburn has left me with a headache.

dh is at the shops trying tio get zantac/ranatadine for me, if they wont let him get it for a pregnant lady, he will get mesome gaviscon.

i know some pharmacies can be strange about pregnant women taking stuff without prescription.

OP posts:
Elibean · 12/06/2008 11:18

misdee, I never had any problems getting ranitidine over the counter whilst pg - they never asked, I never said, just said 'packet of Zantac please'

MehgaLegs · 12/06/2008 11:23

Oh misdee - it is really horrible isn't it? I had it through all four of my pgs, infact it was always one of my early "symptoms".

I drank Gaviscon by the litre, always had it with me, DH joked that he would make me a Gaviscon holster.

My MW used to give me a prescription for the really big bottles, they would last about a week.

I found coffee and bananas made it really bad.

Hope you find some relief soon.

expatinscotland · 12/06/2008 12:51

I was refused Zantac in two chemists. So I just went to my GP to have it prescribed.

A nurse prescriber can also do it.

warthog · 12/06/2008 12:59

i used zantac all the way through my first pregnancy. by the end i was up to 4 - 6 a day!

this pg, i'm on omeprazole, but i have permanent reflux so this will be a life-long thing. had to squeeze blood out of a stone to get them to prescribe it to me though.

VictorianSqualor · 12/06/2008 13:04

Drink hot chocolate with mallows.
It works, I promise.
For some reason I found out with my last pregnancy and suggested it on my ante-natal thread, I don't think there was anyone it didn't work for.
I assume it's something to do with the melted mallows.

misdee · 12/06/2008 14:16

have taken some zantac about an hour ago (note beans on toast aggrevates my heartburn ), but i can still feel the burn creeping up. can i take a quick swig of gaviscon to stop this burn?

OP posts:
Twinkie1 · 12/06/2008 14:18

Eat some yogurt Misdee - it is an alkaline that will neutralise the stomach acid - it really does work - plain yogurt best - I damaged my throat and voice box by puking acid up due to severe heart burn and acid reflux when pregnant and this is really the best cure.

Do not drink milk or eat fatty things, the tomato based sauce on your beans is probably acidic and would have aggravated things.

expatinscotland · 12/06/2008 14:19

yes, swing some gaviscon.

i had to take both, too, whilst pregnant with DD2 or it was back on the omeprazole.
