don't know

sympathy

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/06/2008 22:46

Sorry misdee, I can't remember - but I've been suffering from stress-related indigestion/heartburn recently and just wanted to sympathise with you. It's truly awful.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/06/2008 22:47

How many weeks are you now?

misdee · 11/06/2008 22:47

16weeks.

You can take 20ml at a time. I used to swig it from the bottle.

If its really bad, then Zantac (ranitidine) is safe to take and works much better.

WowOoo · 11/06/2008 22:47

Can you drink milk? I found this and sitting/sleeping! as upright as possible helped. Don't really know about Gaviscon sorry. Milk made mine a bit better. hated heartburn, you poor thing.

Poledra · 11/06/2008 22:48

I never measured it by spoonful - swigged it straight from the bottle as required

sweetkitty · 11/06/2008 22:48

Ask the doc to prescribe you Zantac if it gets really bad, I know they are a bit iffy prescribing it in pregnancy but one tiny tablet works wonders.

I have stopped using spoons and just swig the Gaviscon.

Olihan · 11/06/2008 22:50

As much as you want, afaik. The worst it will do is give you wind .

What did you have for dinner? I found that certain foods triggered mine (orange juice, fresh bread and cream were particularly bad culprits) and once I avoided them the hearburn only happened occasionally.

Eating a plain oatcake also helped a bit as it sort of keeps everything down a bit.

I was told to avoid drinking during an attack too, as apparently liquid refluxes more easily than solids so makes it worse.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 11/06/2008 22:50

fantastic hairy babies on pics as well

thornrose · 11/06/2008 22:52

I had horrendous heartburn and I didn't use a spoon, I drank from the bottle! (I had a very hairy baby too!)

sweetkitty · 11/06/2008 22:54

I've had baldies so thats disproves the theory.

misdee · 11/06/2008 22:54

right am going to drink whats left in the bottle.

will buy another one in the morning.

i did have a horredous puking session earlier (sorry!) and i think that triggered tonights attack.

Desiderata · 11/06/2008 22:56

Don't take gaviscon .. take the other stuff.

The hard stuff, in tablets ... damn, but I can't remember the name of it!

Yes I can!!

RENNIE (or however it's spelt).

umberella · 11/06/2008 22:57

ooh i slept with a huge bottle of gaviscon next to my bed for the last 3 months of pg. it was terrible. just used to swig it from the bottle as it was so bad it woke me up several times a night!

misdee · 11/06/2008 22:57

no rennie in the house.

think dh has zantac.

but thats perscription only right?

OP posts:
Quadrophenia · 11/06/2008 22:58

rennie's helped me loads and i suffered terribly, drank milk on my 21st birthday!

dizzydixies · 11/06/2008 22:58

misdee - magnum whites, cannot stress them enough as a serious soother for heartburn

emma1977 · 11/06/2008 22:59

You can buy zantac over the counter, but you are entitled to free prescriptions as you are pregnant.

Desiderata · 11/06/2008 23:00

Honestly, misdee, if Gaviscon isn't working too well, try Rennie.

It's like the old pep-up argument. Some people swear by Red Bull (doesn't work for me), and some people swear by Pro-Plus (does work for me).

Perhaps you're a chalky girl when it comes to pregnancy indigestion?

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 23:02

I have been guzzling Gaviscon. GP prescribed a big 500mL bottle.

But I'm probably going to have to move to Zantac in 3rd trimester here.

I had horrible heartburn with DD2 and she was bald as a cue ball.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 11/06/2008 23:02

Crikey! 16 weeks already!

I used to just swig it down too

I've just realised - DD has a school friend who has always looked 'familiar'. Looking at your profile, this girl is the spitting image of your DDs.

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 23:03

Rennie's stop working for me long ago.

I, too, wake up with it.

It sucks.

18 more weeks.

Elibean · 11/06/2008 23:05

Congratulations Misdee, I didn't know

(re the pg, obviously, not the heartburn!)

I took Zantac from around 14 weeks with dd2 (have a hernia courtesy of pg #1) and later on, when even that wasn't heping, I took Omeprazole, with OB's blessing. Zantac is far, far better than Gaviscon and has been used a lot in pregnancy with no adverse effects.

Heartburn is awful, and if untreated can damage your oesophagus, so hope you can get whatever meds you need asap.

expatinscotland · 11/06/2008 23:06

I got an ulcer in my oesophagus with DD1 from it, Eli .

I had a shite GP and crap midwife care and thought all I could take was Rennie's.

I also had to take some mega drugs in hospital for the acid reflux.
