Lower back pain

My lower back and hips feel very stiff and locked up. Standing and walking is painful. I have various chronic illnesses and disabilities so have taken my muscle relaxants but am now having faecal incontinence. Do you think this is worth trying to get a GP appt tomorrow?

Faecal incontinence is concerning. I would call 111.

HighStreetOtter · 01/01/2026 17:30

Could be cauda equina, you need to get seen tonight.

Rosieposy89 · 01/01/2026 17:33

That's an A&E job

FadedRed · 01/01/2026 17:35

Agree with pp’s, could be Cauda Equina, and you need to go to A& E asap.

Thanks for replying. Is it A&E even though with my painkillers and muscle relaxants the pain stops? When the drugs wear off I can really feel it but not when the drugs are working.

Yes with the fecal incontinence. That’s the main issue. If it is CE and it’s not treated then the nerve damage can be long term/permanent. I know someone who had it though her symptoms were the other way round and she couldn’t poo or wee for years afterwards due to nerve damage. I have back issues and have always been told any continence issues either end then to go straight to hospital.

Thanks all for your advice and help.

Good luck, OP. Let us know how you get on.

Thank you @Kentisbeare @Rosieposy89 @HighStreetOtter @FadedRed for your help. I was taken to A&E by ambulance but luckily it just seems to be part of my ongoing disability/ chronic illness and not something new. I was in for a couple of days but home now.

Glad you went in, OP, and that they ruled out CE. Hope you can be more stable going forward. Many thanks for letting us know.
