Bowel movement advice

Ok so I’ll start by saying I haven’t changed my diet at all recently. But I’ve gone from doing fairly decent size poos every day or 2 to now only doing small ish ones. They aren’t watery but they aren’t hugely solid

nothing has changed at all apart from I have a mild cold but I’m still eating the same as always

i tried a laxative the pharmacist said was good and it created lots of gas but still no big poos. I have been farting a lot but when I go to toilet I just get more farts or smaller poos as above

do I need to worry? I mean my bowels still are moving but not like usual

Anyone?

Are you taking any medication? Are you sticking to the same routine?

If your bowels are moving I’m not sure why you want to take a laxative.

I am taking medication but it’s long term medication so nothing new and as I mentioned in my OP I haven’t changed my diet. I’m anxious cos yes I’m going but it’s changed

I think if it goes on for longer than 2-3 weeks it's a good idea to make an appointment.

Agree with appt comment but in the meantime…if you have a cold then mucus/snot can alter it, also medication. I find an activia yoghurt helps, and lots of fruit juice/squash/water. Is it a Christmas rich food thing?? I usually reach a point I just need something plain and lots of veg to reset my system (often feel the same on holiday!)

sorry should have said activity rather than routine and been a bit clearer!

If you’re not moving around as much (eg my job is an active one but I’ve spent time on the sofa with my snotty cold) then that can also affect how bowels work.

anonymoususer9876 · 30/12/2025 13:36

Also how long has this been going on for? A few days/weeks/months?

gottalovemushrooms · 30/12/2025 16:09

It’s not a Christmas food thing. Has been going on about a week I think, maybe slightly less. Have just gone but wasn’t awfully big but was ok I guess

Have you changed your drinks ? Less water more fizzy / alcohol over Christmas? That could change your stool size and consistency

travailtotravel · 30/12/2025 17:21

Loads of water. Loads of fruit and veg. Massive bowl of Bran Flakes. It'll reset ...

TomatoSandwiches · 30/12/2025 17:24

Do you feel like you still need to empty your bowels when you have finished on the toilet?

Strawberrydelight78 · 30/12/2025 21:15

Dulcolax is good but just take 1 teaspoon first dose and mix in water. Have to avoid dairy as well as I found out the hard way.
