Cr20 · 09/12/2025 12:20

what was everyone’s H-pylori symptoms

doctor and hospital think I have it , never done any tests because they put me on omeprazole first which leads to false negatives.

my symptoms have got progressively worse over the past 2 weeks
upper abdominal burning pain
feeling bloated
sick/nausea
increased anxiety and panic
flank pain and back pain
loss of appetite
fatigue

at night I struggle to sleep
I shake and my feet and hands sweat uncontrollably

doctor has given me treatment but heard a lot of negative stories on the treatment

I tested positive many years ago. TBH- I have no idea what symptoms I had, because nothing changed after I was treated!

In my late 20's, I noticed I'd sometimes get reflux but also soft food balling up in my throat. Things like very fresh bread or soft chips. Not every time, but occasionally. It would ball up and sometimes I'd have to vomit to clear it. GP eventually did a H-pylori test which was positive, so I had the treatment.

I still get reflux and the food balling occasionally, and still use omeprazole! Your symptoms sound like something different OP. Are you peri, diabetic, thyroid issues, gall stones?

TiredofLDN · 09/12/2025 12:32

Could be gallstones. I had a fair few of those symptoms and they showed up on an ultrasound.

Cr20 · 09/12/2025 13:24

@JDM625@TiredofLDNwent to the hospital lastnight and says my blood work was absolutely fine an thinks it’s gastritis or Hpylori sounding. They don’t think they had to do a X-ray because my blood work was fine

It could be anything from gastritis to a hernia to gallstones etc. you need an endoscopy and a biopsy for h pylori and/or celiac after stopping ppi for 2 weeks.

GertrudeTheGPig · 09/12/2025 13:39

I had H-Pylori in my mid thirties. I got the triple cocktail which I think was 2 antibiotics and perhaps something for the side effects.

Anyway my signs were feeling very sick in the morning and poo that smelt very bad. I can't remember if I felt generally unwell as the feelings of trying not to be sick pretty much over-rode everything else.

2 weeks on triple cocktail and I was fine. It was very unpleasant though.

They normally test for it by giving you a small bottle which you have to scoop some of your own poo out of the toilet and put it in the bottle and then hand into the surgery. Presumably some lucky person in a lab gets to test it.

Then after the antibiotics I had to do the poo and scoop again to check I was clear from the h-pylori which I was.

GertrudeTheGPig · 09/12/2025 13:42

p.s. as that was many years ago (approx 15) they may test for it differently or treat it differently now

G1ng3 · 09/12/2025 13:53

I have just finished treatment for this. I was given two lots of antibiotics and omeprazole for a week. I had to provide a stool sample and the results took about a week to come back. I was only tested after my doctor questioned a gallstone diagnosis which has since been confirmed with a referral for urgent surgery being requested so I would also encourage you ask about about gallstones as the symptoms can be the same.

Friendlyfart · 09/12/2025 14:10

You need a stool test for h pylori, but gold standard is endoscopy.

Nannyfannybanny · 09/12/2025 14:14

You don't need an endoscopy and biopsy for helibactor, I had a fecal last month. It was negative. I did have to have an endoscopy, and have esophagitus.Sometimes its a breath test..I had Cholecystitis with symptoms like yours , plus I was loosing weight. Ended up having a cholecystectomy and appendicectomy..

I have exactly the same. On and off for a few months but really ramped up the last two weeks. H pylori negative in my case unfortunately as at least that would have had a clear treatment.

I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow as I had a slightly raised FIT test and have a history of polyp but I am pretty sure the issue is in the upper GI so no doubt there will be more testing afterwards to try and get to the bottom of it.

My anxiety makes it hard not to think it is something sinister but I am hoping it is "just" gastritis. I wonder if flares up can be triggered by virus, ive been googling a lot and seem to be seeing a lot of posts on MN about gastro issues lately.

Im surprised they just gave you treatment without being sure it is what you have.

YogaLite · 09/12/2025 18:06

Had stomach pain at night mostly and was off food, had to do a toxicology stool sample which confirmed it. Currently awaiting a FIT results as they suspected an ulcer and an ultrasound. Finished antibiotics recently.

You can buy h pylori test in Boots, I will do mine when FIT comes back if dr doesn't do it again.

Nomoreink · 09/12/2025 18:19

I was being sick / diarrhoea regularly past two years and none of my family were. Did a stool test and blood tests.

had to take triple medication / antibiotics. Hoping it’s cleared this up.

Cr20 · 09/12/2025 22:20

@YogaLite the doctors can’t do a H-pylori test because I’m already on omeprazole which it will give a false negative even if I’m positive. I would have to stop omeprazole for 2 weeks to test

OP posts:
Cr20 · 09/12/2025 22:21

@Nomoreinkhow long after taking treatment did you feel better

OP posts:
YogaLite · 10/12/2025 08:33

@Cr20 that's interesting, thank you for mentioning it.
I was told to take Omeprazole and Metronidazole with antibiotics for h pylori, even tho I didn't have reflux or bloating to reduce stomach acid which apparently helps to get rid of the beastly thing. The pain seems to have gone but I will wait a bit longer before retesting.

I wish I could guess where I got it to avoid in the future but for now I am off seafood as e-coli was also found but that's apparently now clear 🤞

Good luck to all the fellow sufferers !

Cr20 · 10/12/2025 08:38

@YogaLite
sorry for the confusion , I meant like to carry out a H-pylori test you can’t have omeprazole in your body or it can effect the results of the test.

he gave me the antibiotics and the hospital put me on a higher doze of omeprazole which I will take once ive finished me course of antibiotics for my uti.

honestly don’t even know what’s going on in my stomach as I feel it’s effecting everything. Wish I could just see inside my body or at that hospital demanded a scan but they didn’t think it was necessary for the radiation. At least if I got it then I would have pease of mind where the pain was coming from.

I was actually thinking of getting a private scan so then I know where the pain is coming from and can treat it from there.

OP posts:
YogaLite · 10/12/2025 09:10

My Dr ordered the scan, I haven't had it yet. Obviously they will be looking for any abnormalities, not sure they would see ulcers that way.

january1244 · 10/12/2025 11:22

It’s quite a hard thing to get rid of. I’ve had two triple therapy and one quad therapy for h pylori. The h pylori tests are all clear now but I still have gastritis from my endoscopy. And all the symptoms, which include burning stomach, upper GI bloating, nausea, trouble swallowing, reduced appetite etc
