Flu with no cold symptoms

Hi everyone. I have been absolutely fine, bar a very mild sore throat at the start of the week (which has now gone). I woke up suddenly in the middle of the night and vomited a few times. That has stopped, but I now have terrible body aches, a headache (thankfully improving with paracetamol and means I can actually type this post!) and have barely moved from bed all day. I paid for the flu jab a couple of months ago. I initially wondered if it was norovirus, but I haven’t been sick that much, and have had no diarrhoea. My question is, can flu present without the typical cold symptoms? I don’t have a stuffy nose at all, and the sore throat has gone. Before the paracetamol kicked in, even my fingers were hurting!

Anyone had anything like this recently?

I’d expect a cough and chills with the flu to be honest.

People at work have these symptoms with Covid.

Realisation14 · 04/12/2025 17:32

COVID or a stomach virus that ISN'T noro cause it's not the only one. My niece had this two weeks ago, sore throat and mild fever then started vomiting, 48hrs after the vomiting ended she started with diarrhea. It's not the flu.

Covidwoes · 04/12/2025 17:46

@PersephoneParlormaidme too! I felt so bad earlier I couldn’t reply to any messages on my phone, but paracetamol has helped a lot. I feel terrible again when I get out of bed.
@ivyleafgeranium that’s interesting. I have had covid 4 times, but not in absolutely ages. This feels worse than those, but the strain will have changed many times since my 4th bout.

@Realisation14it does sound like what your nieve had. How long was she poorly for?

I've had flu twice and didn't have cold symptoms either time. I had body aches, high temperature, weakness, exhaustion.

PinkSkies2026 · 04/12/2025 17:57

You can even have flu with no symptoms.

I've had gastro things since early September I think. Then had a cold. Then full blown flu. I'm still wondering whether it was really bad sinusitis. Everything hurt and I had to go to bed for two days and couldn't move. I also kept throwing up after eating due to coughing.

Basically it's been a rubbish winter!

Raisinsandweetabix · 04/12/2025 18:08

Can I just ask- how does anyone know if it's flu???

Covidwoes · 04/12/2025 18:13

@Raisinsandweetabixyou can buy flu tests which are similar to Covid, but other than that (or unless you are admitted to hospital and tested), I guess you just go by symptoms.

I can feel the aches/pains creeping back again into my back now. I just hope DH and my two DDs (7 and 4) steer clear.

The body aches are honestly on another level. It is going to be a long night…

She was poorly for a total of 6 days. Sore throat & temp started on the wednesday for her, vomiting the next day, then diarrhea started at the weekend!

I woke up this morning in a pool of sweat. Now got a dodgy tummy and body aches still going strong. I am a teacher and feeling guilty about being off work, but there is absolutely no way I could power through this!

Noro is absolutely not always horrendous anyway. I read a study where they deliberately infected people and of the people who developed symptoms, something like a third only vomited once. It’s really not always exorcist levels

lostatsea999 · 05/12/2025 11:12

Yes, now approached 2 weeks with it. Absolute misery the only thing I haven't had is sneezes or lose of smell.
Towards end of day I'll start feeling improved, lie down, each morning it is back.

Feel it is now a chest infection.

You done the right thing by staying home personally, I went to my training this week and all bar 2 people we were all battling colds and coughs.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 05/12/2025 11:20

I've had flu 3 times in my life that I'm aware of. I've never really had much by way of cold symptoms with it. As it you're experiencing, I had horrendous body aches, extreme temperature changes and the crushing headache from hell every time.
