A quick question froma first time miscarrier here hope no-one minds.

Heres the story so far (for those of you that havent seen it)

Found out had a MMC at 7+5 after some spotting- this was the 12th May. Bled all week then miscarried on the 19th may. Had a night in hosp due to heavy bleeding. scan showed lots of blood but no retained products apparently.....on 25th of may went back to hospital to have retained products removed and given antibiotics although swab showed no infection. Bleeding carried on, not heavy just steady and red then last week stopped. Had an internal scan last wednesday which showed all clear but nurse did a test which was positive. However went away for weekend with DH and had sex and bleeding started again, red fresh but has got heavier and have feeling like its AF (belly ache, headache). HOWEVER am still getting positive tests. Would it be AF if the tests are still positive??? or should I be worried?

Sorry for long post, just need some reassurance.

hope you are all ok.

You should see your GP tomorrow or ring the EPAU you were on for advice.

Preg tests are usually negative after 2 weeks once all the products (I hate that term) have been passed. However, rarely it can take up to 6 weeks.

The main reason that it is still positive is that you may have some retained products and need rescanning to confirm or exclude this.

All the best.

Had scan last wednesday, both on tummy and internally, and it was all clear.

I which case, I wouldn't be worried.

Sounds like AF.

mummy2olivia · 09/06/2008 21:13

Can you get AF even when you are testing positive still? thats whats messing my head up!!! surely if the hormone is there it stops AF?? dunno. my head hurts.....

OP posts:
emma1977 · 09/06/2008 21:29

The hormone that tests postive (beta HCG) has nothing to do with supressing periods. Beta HCG can kick around for a while before evetually going back to zero. A different set of hormones controls your menstrual cycle, which will have gone back to normal now. I won't bore you any further!

mummy2olivia · 09/06/2008 21:33

AF has come really quick then. They said 4-6 weeks. hopefully back to normal now. Thanks Emma. x

You're welcome.

Just noticed that we're both Midlands-based. I hope I'm not your GP IRL!!

mummy2olivia · 09/06/2008 21:42

imagine!!

no- my GP is a man that is in touch with the real world. a rare breed. very lovely and very helpful.

If I am unsure about bleeding by wednesday I will contact him and see if he will do some blood tests to make sure HCG is dropping.

That sounds like a good plan to me.

When i miscarriage in 2006 i bled on and of for about 5 weeks then 2 weeks later with AF.

mummy2olivia · 10/06/2008 21:30

Spoke to EPU today and they have said that it could be AF but is more likely breakthrough bleeding from the hormones- especially as it is quite light, red and fresh. Have all warning signs to look out for. Am very prone to breakthrough bleeding when I am on the pill so this sort of makes sense.

Hi. Quick question for all of you, are we supposed to get scanned after m/c to make sure everything has passed? I ask coz I went to my dr when started bleeding and askedher about it and she said there's no need. But I wanted confirmation. It's been 6 weeks since mc at 6 weeks and I'm peeing all the time, I'm having really bad mood swings and am crying at the silliest of things. All things that happen when I'm preg. Is there a chance I fell again straight away or of it surviving the bleed?

mummy2olivia hope you don't mind me jumping in, but wouldn't have a clue where to post to ask this.

mummy2olivia · 10/06/2008 21:42

Thats ok- dont know the answer though!! Some EPUs will scan you, some not. Mine did and was all clear.

Haven't had time to read any but OP, so sorry if I'm repeating anything...

I had several MMCs, and yes did still have very faint +ve test when AF arrived. Most pg tests are very sensitive, and will show lower levels of HcG in urine than they say they will.

HTH, and I'm so sorry for your loss...xxx

MKG · 10/06/2008 22:27

When I had my miscarriage in January it took a month for my HCG levels to return to 0. So even though I had a scan that showed nothing, I still tested positive when I went to the midwife. I bled on and off for 3 weeks too.

MKG · 10/06/2008 22:31

littleboyblue-If your worried have them test your hcg levels. My midwife (here in US) follows them down to 0. So once a week for a month (sometimes twice) I went to get blood drawn until it went to 0. It can't hurt to see if they are falling or not.

emma1977 · 10/06/2008 22:41

LBB the most straightforward thing to do would be to take a urine preg test. They are very sensitive, so will detect if you are still pregnant. If you had a complete miscarriage 6 weeks ago, it should be negative. Although there is a faint possibility that you could have caught again since then if you have been trying.

It isn't standard practice to refer and scan everyone who experiences what sounds like a miscarriage, but I admit the majoriy seem to get scanned. Serial serum HCG tracking isn't standard practice in the UK either unless there is another reason for it, e.g. constant bleeding/querying ectopic.

Are you getting any bleeding at all?

littleboyblue · 11/06/2008 07:39

Thanx MKG and emma1977.
I'm not having any bleeding at all. At time, I bled for about 4 days and was heavy enough for the sensible part of my brain to know that nothing survived. I'll give af another week to get here and I'll test to see if I got pregnant again straight after

littleboyblue · 11/06/2008 15:50

Ok. I've just taken a clearblue test and it's positive. So pregnant again or hormone levels still up after 6 weeks?
Gonna ask somewhere else on here too so apologies if you read thice twice!

emma1977 · 11/06/2008 19:58

You need to see your GP who can arrange further investigation for you.

Initially serum HCG levels may help in determining whether the levels are increasing or decreasing and you will probably need a scan too.

LobstersLass · 11/06/2008 23:44

littleboyblue, 6 weeks after my miscarriage (also at 6 weeks) my beta HCG levels were down to
