Was the banana unripe? That can cause bloating.

I am currently in hospital after an op and suffering from morphine induced constipation, pain and bloating from that and lactulose laxative.

Recently found a website called verywellhealth. It's US but gives what seems reasonable advice on foods to avoid.

Disclaimer not a medic just a fairly recent sufferer.

Were you diagnosed with gastritis by endoscopy? Are you taking the likes of Nexium?

I have gastritis as a result of H Pylori some years ago which was treated successfully. The patch of gastritis just won't go away! But thankfully I don't have symptoms. However, I did have a gastric bleed recently from the gastritis site and had to have it treated in hospital. I take low dose aspirin and they reckon that was the cause.

Hey @soocool no I never got an endoscopy , I went to the doctors and he felt my stomach and said it didn’t feel like anything to worry about , no lump etc 🤨 I then mentioned that it could be caused by H pylori but said because they gave me omeprazole to start with that I’ll need to come off of that for 2 weeks other wise I can get a false negative. I mentioned I can’t wait that long as I’ve not eat and lost 6lb in just over a week and need to be present for my boys. So he offered if I wanted to just be prescribed the antibiotics to treat the H.pylori and see if it works. I’m on antibiotics just now for a urine infection so after I stop this course I shall start it all.

how did you feel after taking the medication for it ? Did you have a low appetite or unable to eat ?

Before I was treated for H Pylori (which was discovered by endoscopy), I couldn't eat much either. I felt full after a few mouthfuls and nauseous too. I lost weight and then the bells started to ring at the docs and off I went for endoscopy and the rest is history!

I won't lie, the treatment for HP was a bit rough. Hefty antibiotics and ppi (esomeprazole) over two weeks. But I persevered and had a further test to confirm the infection was gone. My appetitie and eating went back to normal following treatment.

I feel great now. H Pylori is under diagnosed I think. Most docs think our symptoms are acid reflux etc. It is true that you can get a negative HP result if you are taking PPIs during the test.

It's easily treatable and honestly, the relief is immense when it's gone. I was left with patches of gastritis, but they haven't caused me any issues at all. I'm on ppi (lansoprazole) for life now, and it gives good protection for me as I have to take daily aspirin which can cause ulcers and bleeding.

I hope you'll be ok again soon. It's not life threatening, but it can be very uncomfortable. I know!

@Cr20 see my reply above. x

H Pylori can be diagnosed with a breath or stool test also. No PPIs for at least two weeks prior to the test though!

@soocool I went to the doctors the other day and he couldn’t feel any lump or anything so wasn’t worried , he did say it could be H-pylori but again because I’ve been on omeprazole for 2 weeks he can’t do any tests yet but did give me the options of taking the antibiotics anyways on which I agreed to. I’ll start them on Monday as I’m on trimethoprim for a uti just now.

it really does make you feel awful , the pain is like radiating to my left side and back and just that constant nausea and not eating is just literally hell when I love my food it’s so frustrating. I also feel like because I’m not getting any nutrients I’m exhausted and more tired so need to find some vitamins.
im praying this is the case and I’ll feel a bit back to normal soon as it’s really affecting my anxiety.

how long were you on the medication before seeing/feeling results ?

Once the two week treatment of antibiotics and ppi was done, it wasn't long before I felt human again. Took a little while (a good few weeks really), but day by day I could see a vast improvement. Like you said, being able to eat properly again was great, and that improved my well being - naturally.

Could I suggest (if you haven't already) taking a good probiotic whilst you are on the courses of antibiotics. I took them and felt they helped balance things out in the gut. I used the Optibac brand, but there are many others out there.

All the best.

soocool · 06/12/2025 10:30

Oh, and I survived for many months on protein shakes and live yogurt and in the end I was prescribed Fortisip as I just couldn't eat properly. If you are not eating, try that, or get GP to prescribe Fortisip for a few weeks, it kept me alive no joke, and it's a total meal replacement for those like us who can't (couldn't) eat proper meals.

Cr20 · 09/12/2025 12:24

@soocool what optibac probiotic did you take ?
