Broken humerus - any experiences/advice?

Hello all, I fell walking my dog 2 days ago and have fractured the top of my humerus in my left arm. I’ve been given a sling and co-codamol. I can’t believe how painful and limiting it is. Even standing up from a chair hurts. Does anyone have any experiences they could share?

Are you likely to be left to heal naturally or be operated on? I’m ten months on, still not regained range of movement and having physio to hopefully regain more. Very very painful injury, was on painkillers for over two months and didn’t drive for over three.

My advice is to try to keep it moving when permitted. I developed a frozen shoulder which set back any recovery by months

Not me but elderly relative suffered this. Only advice is please do the physiotherapy to prevent loss of muscle and mobility.

I hoping it’ll heal naturally. I’ve got a fracture clinic appointment in a week when they’ll do another x-ray. I’m hoping I’ll get some physio, I’m assuming it’s standard with this kind of fracture.

I broke my shoulder and hip at the same time and the shoulder recovery was much more painful. Despite having major surgery for hip and none for shoulder.

Idk if humerus but it resonated to elbow so felt like elbow was broken as well. Couldn't lift arm or squeeze or write with hand/wrist for about three weeks.

You should ask for stronger pain relief. It's really annoying as I now can't lift my arm fully up like I used to. So do your physio and take plenty of strong pain relief, gradually reducing.

It probably will take a couple months before you have relatively normal full use of it.

Wishing you the best recovery x
