I’ve been very constipated. I have the urge to push but nothing is actually coming out so after being on the loo for some time with no success I call it quits but then I’m left so uncomfortable- I feel like my bowel needs emptying and it feels very heavy and almost like it’s poking out my bum hole ( I’m so sorry for the TMI) I’ve taken 1 max strength senicot tablet 2 days ago and haven’t had any relief so I’ve just taken another 2 tonight.

has anyone any suggestions?

Two kiwi fruit a day has been proven to help constipation, skin on.
Chia seeds -a tablespoon mixed in water and knocked back quickly before they swell is called an ‘internal shower’ because it’s so effective in clearing you out.
Dragon fruit is supposed to be very good, but I’ve never eaten on myself.

Dulcoease (not dulcolax!) each evening can help get you back into a regular rhythm, or fybogel. I don’t rate senicot myself.

I now take the Movicol/Laxido sachets regularly and they really help. You can get it over the counter. I took 2 daily for 3/4 days when I was really bad, now one every couple of days.

Movicol/laxido. You can buy it over the counter at a pharmacy.

vipersnest1 · 06/11/2025 19:58

Tackle it from the other end - glycerine suppository. You can buy them off the shelf in most supermarkets.
Also follow advice above to avoid in the future!

FurForksSake · 06/11/2025 19:58

You could try glycerine suppositories to clear out what’s in your rectum. I then also take lactulose to keep things moving.

https://www.poison.org/articles/internal-shower id advise caution with the chia seeds, they should only be consumed soaked and gradually building up. Now is not the time to give yourself a worse blockage.

Is the “internal shower” drink from TikTok safe?

The “internal shower” drink popularized by TikTok contains chia seeds, lemon juice, and water, and is reported to help bowel function. Altho

I had better luck with Senacot than Movicol but I needed 2-3 days of taking either before they worked. Do you know what’s triggered it?

phantomofthepopera · 06/11/2025 20:03

I mix a tablespoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix it together and down it like a shot. Within an hour or so it’s like I’ve taken bowel prep. Nothing is left! Good luck!

I hope you get relief soon. If it's any help I have diverticulosis and need to keep regular..

Every morning I have a weetabix with a fistful of mixed MILLED chia and flaxseeds, wheat bran, and mashed kiwi and berries. Might sound awful to some but I mix it all with hot water and stir it up. Rarely have an issue now. But if I do, I top up that brekkie with a second cup of very hot coffee. That gets it all moving.

Constipation is one miserable thing. I hope you get sorted.

FurForksSake · 06/11/2025 20:05

For tonight you could just make sure you drink plenty, have a warm bath and massage your tummy, lower back and botty cheeks. Also, sit on the loo and do long moos or pretend your are blowing out candles / bubbles. It helps move the poop through! You can dry child and happy baby yoga poses to relieve the discomfort too.

Worriedmrs · 06/11/2025 20:05

If you are okay with magnesium then 60ml milk of magnesia will give you relief overnight without any cramping, nausea or abdominal pain.

You can get it from most supermarkets.

ShenandoahRiver · 06/11/2025 20:06

Any change in bowel habits lasting more than a couple of weeks should be checked out by your GP.

CrinaCara · 06/11/2025 20:11

I was going to say get yourself checked out to be on the safe side too

MrsDoubtfire1 · 06/11/2025 20:17

To prevent chronic constipation you need to get a pattern going. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day. Make sure you have a regular intake of fibre every couple of hours, porridge, oat biscuits, apples, celery, prunes, dates, etc. Make sure you eat lots of root veg like potatoes, swede, carrots. But keep it all regular to your bodies needs i.e. don't create unnecessary bloating. Chew food well, Get yourself a potty stool from Amazon. These are amazing. And above all relax. So you didn't do one today, you will go tomorrow. Also, make sure you walk briskly each day for about 20 mines.

incognitomummy · 06/11/2025 20:23

You need to take the double strength senicot every night for 7 days. Plus drink lots of water.

if nothing happens then you speak to the pharmacist and then the GP if the pharmacist doesn’t help. But don’t leave it. Any changes like this should be reviewed with a medical professional if they do not go away.

in the old days I used to find a very strong coffee or 3 plus a cigarette and a walk was enough to get me going!!!!!!!

these days the magnesium powder in water will set me off if I’m not careful. Take it at night.

in the meantime I would not add extra fibre nor eat chia seeds or bananas until this issues is resolved.

once this is sorted you can slowly add more fibre to your diet. But don’t add it to an existing problem!!!

good luck.

Catpiece · 06/11/2025 20:28

A tin of prunes should go straight through you 🍇

Troubler · 07/11/2025 08:19

Glycerin suppositories are the best for this type where it’s ready to come but won’t. Just try and lie on your side with it in place for as long as you can (definitely 15 mins) as the longer you leave it, the better the outcome. Good luck!
