I’m coming to the end of my second week and second lot of antibiotics with an ear infection, it just won’t go and I’m starting to feel throughly miserable with it ,
Going back to doctors on Friday morning but has anyone had any miracle cures? Or idea what the doctors will offer me next?

Has the GP give you an ear spray ?

mightyducks · 29/10/2025 18:11

No , amoxicillin, 5 days , first and then clarithromycin , 7 days , no spray

My last really bad infection took 2 x bottles of antibiotic/steroid spray and 2 x courses of oral antibiotics to clear. Trouble is if your outer ear is full of gunk the antibiotic spray can't get through.

It's also worth asking if they are sure it's not a fungal infection.

No gunk in ear , ears completely clear

This was me and when I finally got to see an ENT doctor they reckoned there was never an infection, it was just very badly blocked. They cleared out the ear and it was solved. They reckoned the GPs I saw just kept represcribing antibiotics even thought they couldn't see anything. So frustrating as my stomach is still recovering from the antibiotics. She said water trapped in behind the wax could create the same discomfort and sensations as an ear infection. Is yours also blocked and could you get it cleared, see if it resolves?

mightyducks · 29/10/2025 18:19

They can definitely see the infection, both GP’s have described what it looks like to me

Can they refer you on to an ENT consultant/hospital then? I think ear infections can be stubborn and can take a few rounds of antibiotics.

DH’s infection didn’t clear up till the Dr took a swab & identified what type of bacteria it was. All the previous antibiotics DH tried wouldn’t kill the type of infection he’d had.

I’m guessing this is the next step for me

Ds4 had an ear infection that didn't clear for months. Saw ENT and eventually diagnosed with cholesteatoma.

I’d secojdcthis. I used to get infection after infection..for years. GPS kept saying it was eczema in my ears. Keep them dry etc
fnally got to see ENT under my works BUPA thingy
first consult, before he did anything else was micro suctioned my ears ..bloody hell it hurt a fair bit when he was right on drum.
told me then not to use any more optimise. Said my ear cancels were a bit wonky and wax could get stuck up close to drum easily . Said thst medicsl term for wax they was deep inside was “manky” in the nicest way! 🤣

I got no further issues at all for 3 years. I then had another bought of blocked and very painful ears about 18 months ago. Back to BUPA. procedure done agian. No issues since.

seems like by wonky canals just cause very slow build up over time and will need suction once in a while.

GPS don’t seem to offer micro suction any more. They cite thst itcdoesnt work and just causes more build up. Not so in my case. So you’ll need to look privately. Ensure they are qualified, don’t do an at home thing- you can do a lot of damage to ears easily if not trained. I think some pharmacist offer, or you can pay one offs with BUPA or similar.

maybe worth a try.

Ask your Gp for Otomize ear infection spray.

Ive been prescribed it several times worked wonders when antibiotics didn’t touch it !
