Dentist and cold/ cough

I’ve got a long awaited extraction booked in the morning, a tooth being pulled that has had a crown break away from five times 😖
typically I have developed a cold since last night and I have a dry tickle cough although it’s not productive or totally uncontrollable.
I intend to phone and tell them but in other’s experience are they likely to cancel?

As long as its not Covid you'll be fine.

Bloody hope so, I’m geared up ready to get the bloody thing out I’m just worried about coughing and something going wrong!

I wouldn’t fancy have a tooth extracted whilst also battling a cold. You’ll probably want to swallow more and will likely have a coughing fit.

Sux2buthen · 26/10/2025 19:31

Yes I’m torn. It’s not an uncontrollable cough it’s sort of every now and again and fairly controllable.
For all I know when I ring they may tell me to wait so I’ll see what they say, I’ll be gutted to delay though. It’s my week off work and childcare is sorted so all was perfect 😫

Well. Cough basically settled overnight. Extraction happened..it was quite brutal the tooth didn’t want to come out
All seemed fine, 7 hours later gushed blood. I called the dentist; they said bite on gauze. Did that, more blood still coming. Called again they said it’s normal, bite more gauze.
currently got a tampon in there, not serious pain yet but I swear I can see through the clot.
im in something of a panic, I don’t have access to urgent care. Dentist said they can’t see me despite being open until 8.
im scared witless of pain in the night worsening I’m a lone mum of 3 non driver and I feel petrified

Oh no, I really hope that it clots soon for you and that you are ok

Sux2buthen · 27/10/2025 18:55

It’s not going well I don’t feel great. Blood not pouring but not stopping either. Got last bit of gauze but at this point I imagine the clot will be long gone

Try not to panic, I know it can seem alarming all that blood but just keep biting down on something for as long as you can. Keep on top of the painkillers too.

RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 27/10/2025 19:11

Make sure you wet the gauze so it’s not just starting the bleeding again every time you take it out - keep pressure on for at least 20 mins

Sux2buthen · 27/10/2025 19:21

Thanks I’m trying not to panic. I haven’t had a drink since this morning really to protect the clot and all this has happened anyway

Being dehydrated will not be helping - can you use a straw on the other side of your mouth?

Sux2buthen · 27/10/2025 19:48

I’m dabbing water. Not got a temp but it’s going up ffs

I don’t think you should use a straw after an extraction, as it dislodges the clot.

Hope it’s calmed down now OP

Ah interesting - I had no idea that it could do that but actually makes sense.

Hope it settled OP and that you got some sleep.

Sux2buthen · 28/10/2025 06:51

I just wanted to thank you for replying. I was in a bit of panic last night and didn’t feel good.
I got a bit of sleep sitting up and I’ve woken up with a gross mouth but the site is dark and I was quite expecting to see bone so I’m hoping it’s a good sign.
a little sore and swollen but as I say the extraction itself was quite violent but that wasn’t the dentists fault; my tooth had three kind of rounded prongs and wouldn’t leave.
managed a bit of water this morning and paracetamol

Aaaaaand looks like dry socket.
I’ve been so careful but think I’ve prodded or sucked in my sleep.
seeing the dentist later today, pain not bad as yet but my fears came true 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
