Cut gum or possible abcess?

Felt my gum was a bit sore today, had a look and saw there was like a little dent and almost like a cut on the gum line by the tooth, took a picture and it looks a bit whitish. No pain on biting (I ate breadsticks at lunchtime!), no visible swelling, it just feels a bit tender and almost like an ulcer type feeling. Went to the dentist a few weeks ago for a check up and had clear x rays and no problems (never had a filling to date). Any ideas - have I perhaps brushed too hard?

I do have a picture but not sure if I can upload in line with community rules!

And my reason for asking is trying desperately to avoid the £75 dentist fee!

Sounds like you sliced it with a breadstick. Try saline rinses on it and wait for a few days to see how it is. An abscess will likely get worse over time but an abrasion will likely get better. If your tooth was x-rayed recently and all good then it's highly unlikely to be an abscess.
