Anyone had Post Infection IBS : did it finally resolve and any tips for managing it.

Think that I have post infection IBS. Have never had any bowel problems before, but after having food poisoning on holiday I have had chronic diarrhoea. Food poisoning was on 1st September and have had diarrhoea every day since. I control it with loperamide but take between 2 to 8 tablets a day to be able to function. I have soiled myself several times because of the urgency to go to the loo which I find very upsetting. Has anyone had this and had it eventually go away - the internet suggests that I could have this for years. Does anyone have an tips to manage it and possible reduce my reliance on medication.
When I read about IBS is suggests people have flair ups but I have it all the time.

Pro biotic.

iBS comes in three forms, IBS D (diarrhoea), IBS C (constipation) or IBS mixed (randomly changes between the two).

do you have muscle spasms etc as well?

often food poisoning/infections kill off a lot of the bacteria in your gut that process food for you. The usual advice is drop down to a very bland diet cutting out all the usual suspects - so no caffeine, alcohol, dairy, citrus etc. you can cut out gluten as well but that’s hard core.

then take lots and lots of probiotics with lots of different bacteria. Slowly build up your diet again being careful before reintroducing stuff and if it causes a reaction stop.

It could be you need antibiotics if it's Samonella from uncooked food etc I had similar years ago and lost lots of weight, I had Samonella, but soon cleared up with a short course of antibiotics.

thanks for this. I ordered some probiotics yesterday and will alter my diet too. Did this help you? I am finding this hard and want to see if there was anything else that I could do - think that I will try anything at this point.. Feeling a bit desperate because I have pooed myself a few times!!

I have IBS mixed.

any kind of infection usually sets it off unfortunately.

probiotics plus basically eating fruit/hummus/white rice and drinking a lot of tea for a few days usually gets it pretty much back under control.

i know where every toilet is in my workplace

Have you seen a dr and had a sample checked out? I woud rule this out first before assuming it is IBS.

I agree with this. It’s a very long time to have had severe diarrhoea. You might have picked up some kind of persistent infection which needs antibiotics. See a doctor and get it checked out before taking probiotics or doing a special diet.

I had this after a course of penicillin in the summer, also had a few accidents a few weeks afterwards. I had every stool and blood test but nothing came back. I ended up taking a probiotic tablet every evening and the fibocalm diarrhoea course of tablets and it’s just about cleared up now after 8 weeks x

Sorry should have said. I did give a sample to the drs and this came back clear. He said take 2 Imodium four times a day but this only helps when I’m taking them. As soon as I stop it is back. He said come back mid November if it does not improve

in the meantime I’m trying to do what I can to get back to normal.
