He has nosebleeds or you do?

If it's him, ask for a coagulant screen from your GP. A prothrombolin test I mean - to check his blood is clotting correctly.

I used to have hellish 12 hour nosebleeds which would only stop if they cauterised the blood vessels. It wasn't for several years that someone thought to test my blood and discovered I have a blood clotting disorder which was causing all the bleeds.

However it can be caused by lots of things - has he still got his adenoids? Ask for a referral to an ENT consultant if it's been going on a while.

I use to get very bad nosebleeds all during my childhood, it was only when I went to uni that they stopped and my doctor said it was because my parents smoke as it makes the membranes very sensitive (if I remember correctly), there can be lots of irritants - pollen is another.
I also had to have my nose cauterised 5 times over the years.
I remember listening to a radio programme a few years back and a dr was recommending smearing balm/vasaline in the nostrils to dry out the membranes.
If you suspect an allergy see medinose
works on desensitising the membranes using light waves. It has changed my life and is safe for children.

thanks you two. It is DS2 (almost 4) who get them. Has done since an op to remove a tumour from his neck/throat when he was 1. They are extreme. I ahve just changed my bedclothes, his bed clothes and half his soft toys are soaking in the bath in cold water. I am justy sick of it all. And before this is was the same reflux. DH has a blood clotting disorder (haemophillia) so we are used to blood per se so maybe I am jhust sick of it. In fact right now I am sick of it all

Sorry need to rant

Oh sorry paperchain, didn't realise it was a blood clotting disorder.
Oh poor thing, and poor you, is there nothing they can do? I use to go round with twisted bits of tissues up my nose....
does anything aggravate the condition?

whomovedmychocolate · 04/06/2008 20:18

Has your son been tested for haemophilia - most blood clotting disorders are inherited. I have a factor X deficiency and my son (when he finally decides to arrive) will need testing because it's associated with haemophilia in boys.

If he's losing a lot of blood he may need clotting factors transfused to stop it recurring - and he'll get anaemic as well if you don't get it treated.

It is horrible, I'm sorry you are going through it. It used to look like an abbatoir in our house when mine went.

paperchain · 04/06/2008 20:20

sorry barking it is DH who has haemophillia. And by the 'law' of genetics, the DSs cant have it. But DS2 certainly has thin blood. they think it is because when he had his op on his neck they had to cut through a lot of the blood vessels in the back of his throat and remove some of the bone whcih has weakened them.

Sorry I shoudnt rant about it. It isnt his fault. but sometimes I get so sick of dealing with damn illness

Oh me too Paperchain, in my previous life I was famous for my patience, now I seethe and swear with the best of them!
I now know, after having 3 children, I could never be a nurse....
Of course you should be able to rant, that's what mn is for and this time of the night I'm all out of mothering, I have nothing left to give. After 7.30, I want to make a sign up and wear across my front: 'CLOSED'.

paperchain · 04/06/2008 20:41

I try to contain my rage as I don't want to alarm the darling neigbours, but I get so wound up by not being able to have a proper rant that I have turned into one of those women who produces spittle from the side of my mouth as I try to keep order. My ds2's favourite thing at the moment is to pick his nose and smear it on the walls, I just despair! I spend half my life quietly mortified. I'm still getting used to having boys, they are lovely but rather like a bunch of puppies on acid. I just can't seem to civilise them!
4- 7 is the worse time, well more like 2- 8...
I'm lovely in the mornings, its just everyone else who puts me in a bad mood....

paperchain · 04/06/2008 21:05
