Twin bloc braces -advice needed

Hi there,

My 10 year old daughter has recently got twin bloc braces, she wearing them all the time which is great. It’s early days, she’s only just realised that she needs to put the bottom jaw forward - which obviously hurts! But when she falls asleep her mouth natually opens. I don’t really understand how she’s meant to keep her jaw forward and mouth closed when she’s fully asleep? In which case I’m wondering if she should just wear the brace during the day?

I’ll speak to the orthodontist, but wondering if anyone else has had this experience- what did you do?

Many thanks

x

The orthodontist will adjust them or give you a key to do so. Perhaps they are deliberately set lighter while she gets used to them.

The problem is at night her jaw naturally opens, so the brace won’t work as her lower jaw needs to sit forward and her mouth needs to close. So it’s technically not working. I don’t know how I get around this.

My youngest DS had these about 5 years ago (age 11). He wore his constantly with the exception of eating under the guidance of his orthodontist. So we had about 2 hours off daily.

We also used it when sleeping so it that he got used to it quickly. Ours were adjustable and after several months, I used to turn a tiny screw 180° each week to create space on the uppers (otherwise, teeth would have been removed). We only needed ours for 9 months before a short break and train tracks.

Thanks, but did he sleep with his mouth open and did the appliance still work?

Yes, he did sleep with his mouth open sometimes but there were grind marks on the twin blocks, so we knew he was trying to close his mouth at night. It took several months before his bite changed since it hurt to correct it. Our orthodontists said the more you wore it, fhe quicker the treatment. We were initially told 12 months but the constant wearing meant it was only 9 months.

Ok thank you! I really hope it works 🫣
