Lost feeling in legs

So last week I woke up and couldn't feel my legs, (and my arms were so weak i couldnt even reach my phone to turn off my alarms)this lasted for about half an hour. Once the feeling came back, my legs were so weak and also heavy. Went to my GP, who ordered bloods, tested my legs with the vibrating tuning fork, and tested the strength of my legs. She said my left leg was much weaker than my right, and she was concerned as I couldn't feel the vibrations in either foot. She has sent an urgent referral to neurology. Bloods came back, only issue was low folate, so now have folic acid for 3 months. My concern is that my dad had Spinocerebellar ataxia, which affected his ability to walk and ended up in a wheelchair, and now all I can think is that I have it. My legs are still not right, some days they just tingle, shake, are weak, or go numb (yesterday whilst doing the food shop my right foot went completely numb). Apologies if im rambling, just wondered if anyone has experienced the same and what the outcome was?

That’s very worrying. Do you know how soon you’ll be able to see a neurologist?

I don’t know anything about your DF’s illness but hopefully that combined with the severity of your symptoms will ensure a speedy and full investigation of what’s going on. Your symptoms could relate to something else. I’ve had a range of much more minor symptoms and currently half way through a 2 year wait to see a neurologist - Relapsing and Remitting MS is a possibility based on my symptoms, but I know from my own research that what you are experiencing is also experienced by people with MS - and that those symptoms can be managed with increasingly effective treatments.

A horribly worrying time for you. Hopefully you will have answers very soon.

Thanks for replying @Seeingadistance I think the wait list for neurology is about 2 years 😖 the GP did mention MS, and sent me for an eye test to check the back of my eyes (all was fine with that). I hope all goes well with you when you see your neurologist 💐

That must be so worrying, hope you get some answers soon 💐 It sounds similar to symptoms a friend of mine had, which turned out to be Gullein barre syndrome. It was awful for her but shes completely recovered now. I think the other thing they checked her for was peripheral neuropathy.

@Pennyanna apologies, I hid away from the world for a bit! Im glad to hear your friend has recovered 💐 I have an appointment tomorrow with the neurologist, so hopefully that'll shed some light on what's going on!

I'm so sorry you've been having these worrying symptoms. I hope the neurologist can find out what's going on and maybe some medication could help?

I used to get nerve pain, itching, numbness and swelling in my lower legs/feet when I was suffering from malnutrition. I am now symptom free since I started taking lots of prescribed vitamins.

I know someone with permanent nerve damage in their leg so they have no feeling below the knee. They are on a really high dose of gabapentin to combat the nerve pain attacks but it doesn't really help on the acute break outs.

Wishing you well x
