Have just been diagnosed with this and apart from feeling wretched (think the worst stomach flu ever and then multiply by 5).

I'm in foreign climes and the doc speaks Arabic and Urdu uently but only pidgin English (yeah, my arabic and urdu not so hot) does anyone have any idea whether this is the one that can recur?

it took my mum six months to get rid of it. good luck.

I once had the one that (tmi - sorry) makes your burps taste like poo [disgusted emoticon] - giardia I think it was called. Was ill for about 3 weeks but it didn't recur once I got home - lost loads of weight though & took a while to recover.

My sympathies - hope you're feeling better soon

oh there is nothing good about this is there.

charmingly its likely from sewage contamination in the water - and I only drink bottled water here.

Hi there, poor you. I caught it in Central America and it went of for a while. It can recur if you dont get all the amoebas. Are you getting treated. You need antibiotics - metronizadole (Flagyl) is pretty much the only thing that gets rid of it. And plenty to drink to keep rehydrated.
But no alcohol - if you drink when on Flagyl you feel worse than the dysentry - its just vile!

Hope you feel better soon.

MrsBadger · 04/06/2008 12:25

if you've caught it early and take the drugs as instructed it shouldn't recur, though it can take a long time to shake off (and it's different to giardia).

It could be from any faecal contamination - usu water but also food, soil, dirty hands etc so do not stress too hard re the bottled water thing.

Meowmix - I was a small 8 (5' 3") and went down to about 6.5 stone with it. I drank loads of fizzy lemon mixed with bottled water, and gallons of chai as I couldn't eat much at all (caught it backpacking in India). Once I was feeling better and eating properly I regained the weight very quickly.

Just drink as much as you can and rest - you will be able to build yourself back up afterwards if you lose a lot of weight - don't worry about that, just rest and concentrate on getting well

oh dear god.

the killer is i can't take any time off (am the boss and its manic and holiday season). this is a disaster.

Sorry - you will have to take time off. SImple. If you dont you will get steadily worse and end up in hospital. Second the advice about fluids and about not drinking alcohol with the meds - will make you feel like you are dying!
