Numb hand

Does anyone know why i keep waking up with a numb hand?

its been a month now and four days out of seven, i wake up with my left hand numb. (I'm right handed). I occasionally get in with my right hand too but not to the same degree. I sometimes get it when I'm relaxing, lying on my sofa too.

I'm 57, fit, slim, healthy. A non-smoker, dont drink or do drugs.

is this old age creeping in?

It could be lots of things, but it was low ferratin for me. I'd advise you to see your GP.

Probably trapping a nerve when you're sleeping. Try altering your sleeping position or using a pillow to cushion your arm in some way. Maybe consider some physio to see if you can free the nerve. See a GP though if that doesn't help as could possibly be something neurological.

Carpel tunnel syndrome?

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 03/10/2025 19:30

Carpel tunnel or low B12 for me. Try and see a GP to find out, nobody here can tell you what is causing yours, just lots of different things that CAN cause it so you’ll be no better off.

OK thanks everyone. I Googled and was surprised at the great array of things it COULD be. I'm glad it's (hopefully) nothing serious.

Does it go numb starting with your thumb or your little finger?

Not the op but can you tell me more please? I get this in my right hand, starts in little and ring fingers. Happens overnight and I figure I just slept funny. It's also one of my migraine aura symptoms.

I keep waking up with a numb hand or arm to! It seems to go in phases of happening continous nights then not at all.

My mattress is dire tbh and I seem to sometimes sleep in the same position or on my front alot. Its sometimes worse when I feel stressed but no idea how that is linked.

A while ago I got sent for chest xrays for a totally unrelated issue. The x ray revealed I have an extra cervical rib. GP asked me if my arm went numb. I said no. Ever since this got mentioned I have noticed my arm does go numb a hell of a lot, and sometimes it wakes me up.

I am being investigated for nerve issues and have discovered that numbness and tingling that starts in the little and ring finger is possibly a constriction or impediment of the Ulna nerve. The nerve conduction tests for this are centred at the elbow. If the numbness starts with thumb side of the hand it is more likely Carpal tunnel problems (wrist).
