Cpap machine. If you travel with it on a plane is it counted as luggage allowance?

Dh has just had a letter to say he's been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. So no doubt he'll be given a cpap machine.

We're going away next year and was wondering about taking the machine? I have no idea how bulky they are?

He'll have to declare it on his travel insurance no doubt?

I'd told him to get tested as could hear him struggling to breath during the night at times.

You can get extra luggage allowance free of charge for essential medication or medical equipment. Give the airline a call. I recently did this with easyJet and they were really helpful.

My dh just carries his in its bag as an extra piece of luggage. He got a tag that says medical device on it and keeps that attached to it.

He hasn't got it yet. He's using a mouth guard that's stopped snoring and he isn't stopping breathing afaik? I haven't noticed it anyway. He didn't use mouth guard when he tested though.

When dc goes with feeding pump we've had to pack everything in one bag (and nothing else in that bag) it gets a special tag and then we go through a specific lane at security where they unpack and scan it all. I'm not sure if that's to do with the fluids or machine.
Yes to letting airline and travel insurance know. One time we were asked to provide a letter from GP (which cost £25) stating it was essential with a list of what he needed.

I've flown with CPAP several times. You are allowed to take it as an extra piece of hand luggage. It is packed in a padded case a bit like a laptop case. The security staff recognise them and allow them through. You might have to open up the case to show them.
