Weird alienesque pulsing in my stomach - anyone know what it could be?

Started a couple of days ago and it's really unsettling. It's around the middle of my stomach so parallel with my belly button and it honestly feels like there's something moving around in there under the surface. Doesn't seem related to eating/digestion because I'm experiencing it in the morning before I've eaten, after food etc to the same extent. I'm 47 so wondering if it's some weird peri-menopause symptom I've not heard about. Any ideas?

Massive fart brewing?

Massive fart brewing?

Not for 48 hours!! Also, really doesn't feel digestive - feels quite close to the skin surface IYSWIM. It's the weirdest feeling

If it is pulsing, then no laughing matter and you should seek urgent medical help. Anyeurism would be a relatively uncommon possibility but it should be ruled out.

Mustbethat · 08/09/2025 14:02

Is it your abdominal pulse?

it’s normal in many people, mine is clearly obvious when I lay down. I’ve always been able to feel it.

if it’s new to you and/or it feels like a pulsing mass it could be an abdominal aneurysm which needs medical assessment urgently.

It doesn't feel like a regular 'pulse' know - I'm pretty sure I've felt that before. Def feels different. Going to lie on the floor for a bit and see if I can 'monitor' it but am taking on board what you say re medical advice.

tapeworm??!

Loubylie · 08/09/2025 14:09

Baby?

ClunkyPigeon · 08/09/2025 14:09

Could you be pregnant?!

tapeworm??!

Wouldn't that be in my gut rather than close to the surface? Also no other symptoms I'd associate with worms

Crikey what a thought. Don't think so though - I'm 47 and I have a mirena coil fitted

If it’s not a regular pulse and feels like something moving it could well be trapped wind.

when you say “parallel” with your belly button what do you mean? There’s a loop of large intestine that goes across your stomach, roughly from the bottom of your ribs underneath your belly button which would fit.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/09/2025 14:12

Ovarian cyst?
I had one & could feel it if I pushed gently with my hand.

I mean I’d be ruling it out at the same time as considering other causes, I think…

Muscle spasms????

Showerflowers · 08/09/2025 14:13

Might be worth getting a pregnancy test. Sil had weird moving feeling in her belly. Turned out to be 24 weeks gone but as she had infrequent periods she hadn’t clocked

yes, I suppose it's around that area so could be that - thank you. It's just weird that it's been going on for so long and doesn't seem affected by what I eat and drink. It's just a v unfamiliar sensation. When I lay down just now it did have more of a kind of pulse feeling to it and I can see the skin moving in line with the feeling (but then again I'm quite skinny so can also see that when my digestion is all over the place)

Thanks everyone for your posts - this is helpful! And I guess I'll get a pregnancy test too if it hasn't resolved by the end of the day. Yikes. I really don't think it can be that though.

OK so there's definitely a regular 'pulsing' that is visible from the surface when I lie flat on my back. It's not entirely unfamiliar - as I said above, I'm sure I've felt pulsing before but this is more marked (and as per the original post there have been other unfamiliar movements). Is this just a thing that happens sometimes i.e. being able to see/feel your pulse in your stomach? Or does it require checking in with a doctor?

OP posts:
spiderlight · 08/09/2025 14:39

Please get that checked out, just in case it's an abdominal aortic aneurism. It probably isn't, but it's worth getting a medical opinion just in case.

TurraeaFloribunda · 08/09/2025 14:40

Do you have pain anywhere? Your back, stomach, pelvis or anywhere at all? Pregnancy, digestion and lying down can make the pulse in your abdomen more noticeable. It’s probably just that now you have noticed it that you are hyper aware of it but I would still get it checked out asap as it has been going on for several days now. As PPs have said, it could be a sign of an aneurysm. I would call 111 for advice. Unless you have any pain, in which case, A&E now!

deathbyprocrastination · 08/09/2025 14:42

No pain and having read a bit more about AAA it doesn't sound as if I fit any of the risk factors. But I'll follow your advice and get it checked out. Thanks again
