Post nasal drip, constant throat clearing and runny nose after eating, what could be the cause?

For many years, I have been experiencing a runny nose after eating, I am constantly having to clear my throat as I feel like there is mucus at the base of my throat and my throat feels 'raspy' but not sure if that is from the throat clearing. I am often blocked in the right nostril and I feel as though I have a constant dripping from the base of my nose into my throat. I am also always 'wet' up my nose. I have lots of little hard lumps up my nose, not sure if this is normal or polyp like lumps? I often suffer from a dry feeling in the back of my throat which can make me cough, especially during the night, this will cause my eyes to stream.

I often have very stingy eyes too and they feel dry. I have tinnitus also but not sure if that is connected at all.

My GP is not interested, just said it's probably post nasal drip and left it at that.

I have also suffered from gut issues for decades, told it's simply IBS and functional dyspepsia. I regularly suffer from nausea, acid feeling, burping, am very gassy and flip from constipation stool to very loose stool without ever changing my diet so no understanding why this happens other than hormones maybe?

I follow a low fodmap diet. I haven't touched dairy for decades as I know it can be mucus forming and also gives me diarrhoea. I don't eat anything hot or spice foods at all, drink only water.

What could be causing this and what if anything could I do to clear this up as I find it very irritating. I often wonder if any of my health issues are connected?

Well, just on the basis of your title I was going to suggest acid reflux, before even reading about your gut issues. That stuff can get everywhere, even if you don't notice heartburn.

Silent reflux. I had similar syomptoms for years. Thought it was a nasal/allergy issue, but it never stopped. Then I started taking omeprazole before bed and it disappeared. Basically, acid was irritating my throat and nose while I slept so they were producing more mucus to countet it.

Could also be nasal polyps / deviated septum. I need to get checked out as I have a constant runny nose when I eat, but I keep putting it off!

Allergic rhinitis

Are you on any meds for high blood pressure?

Thebluespoon · 06/09/2025 15:13

Thanks everyone. I will make another GP appointment and ask her to look into those suggestions.

ViolaPlains No, I am not on any medication.

Could be a dust mite allergy in terms of the nasal symptoms. Antihistamines should help and you could also try a low dose steroid nasal spray (beconase - won't be effective for at least 2 weeks but should start to help after that).

The rest does sound like reflux and you probably need omeprazole for that. Not sure if that could somehow also be causing the nasal symptoms.
