H Pylori triple therapy

periperimeno · 04/09/2025 20:55

I've been prescribed triple therapy medication for H Pylori. Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin and Lansoprazole. They all have to be taken twice daily. Lansoprazole has to be taken on an empty stomach but I'm not sure whether the other two need to be taken with food, as far as I'm aware they all have to be taken together.

Has anyone had this treatment? How did you take them.
I've had the meds waiting to be taken for a few days but Ive wanted to hold off till the weekend when I'm not working in case I have any side effects from the meds.

You can ask this info from a pharmacist

I had it about 12 years ago. I can’t remember exactly how I took the meds, only that I had to have them all together. My symptoms cleared very quickly.
the antibiotics did have side effects though that made me feel a bit rough

Lansoprazole as a standalone has to be taken on an empty stomach 30-60 minutes before eating under regular use. It is a PPI and reduces the amount of acid produced. You should check with your prescriber if you have doubts though.

it's two years since I had this treatment so I can't remember, best to check. You can either ask a pharmacist or in my case I can leave a message with surgery reception and they will get back to me later that day.

I felt pretty ropey the week I was on them, particularly with a horrible taste in the mouth (but I am allergic to penicillin so it might have been the alternative anti-biotic that did that) but the treatment worked really well.

Don't take pro or prebiotic's at the same time, which some people/places will recommend. It can affect the efficacy of the treatment. But so get some in to restore your micro-biome after you have completed the course.
It was really life-changing for me, I hadn't realised how ill the pylori was making me.

I had these 3 for hpylori last year. I cant actually remember how I took them but your pharmacist can help with that. The clarithromycin left an awful taste in my mouth and gave me really trippy dreams. I needed a second round to be fully recovered. It was a lot but it worked. Hope you feel better soon x

Sorry to jump on op post, they found I had this when I had an endoscopy I had no symptoms. I took the antibiotics but the doctor didn’t check to see if I still had it?. Did you check after by doing a stool test?.

periperimeno · 08/09/2025 07:10

Well I'm on day three of meds and the side effects are awful. I've got nausea, stomach ache and insomnia. I feel that rubbish I'm calling in sick at work. I'm really annoyed I'm having to do so.

I seem to to remember that day 3 and 4 were pretty bad. I always get insomnia with antibiotics so I was prepared for that. I took mine the week before Christmas and had to cancel loads of commitments as I just felt too rough and tired.

I'm on day 3 now. I'm trying to eat bland foods. I feel hungry but nauseous and my stomach aches.
Im hoping to feel well enough tomorrow to return to work but if it's anything like today I'd struggle to get out the door because of needing the 🚽

Hi, no they didn't check. I was very keen to know it had gone but the Dr said it could still show up in tests for a good few months after so unless I was having symptoms to assume all was ok.

I felt dreadful on it too. Just wiped out and sick, I couldn't tell if the infection was getting better because the antibiotics made me feel do rubbish. Hang on in there x
