Can hives look like insect bites?

I was in Tesco earlier, and suddenly had an itchy red spot on my arm. I assumed I'd been stung in the carpark. A couple of hours later, indoors at home, another itchy spot came up near to original one, which is also itching again. I don't see how I could have been bitten that time.

The spots look just like the beginning of my usual allergic reaction to insect bites, but there's no pinprick mark. Could they just be hives that have come up for no apparent reason?

Yes I get these, I have chronic idiopathic hives that spread all over me and occur every night if I don’t take a daily antihistamine. Sometimes I’ll get one or two small ‘break through’ hives but they don’t spread. Good luck finding the cause, it could be anything in your environment or just your immune system like me.

Ugh, I've woken with another one on the same arm.

Great. I already have allergies and take antihistamines most days.

What AH do you take for these? I've been put on Fexofenadine this year, and I find that it's not as effective as the OTC AHs for my reaction to insect bites, though it seems to keep my other reactions damped down. I had taken one yesterday.
