What is this sensation all over my skin?

tinkersfig · 31/08/2025 18:13

For the last 3 months I have had what feels like achy pins and needles anywhere from my feet to
my arms. Today it feels like it’s all over my bum cheeks and in my bum hole!

I’ve been to the drs twice, multiple blood tests and on my last visit she just blankly looked at me and said “I don’t know what it is”.

It’s such a strange feeling, not to touch, but it feels like my nerves are on overdrive under my skin? Kind of like the skin pain when you have the flu.

any ideas?

How’s it hanging @Jellyheadbang?

I had two solid days of the sensation being gone and I can feel it creeping back in.

Oh OP, I've had something similar. It started after having covid in 2020. Felt like my arm had been punched, that was the first symptom, then random pins and needles, burning and pain. I was in hospital for 4 days whilst they observed me for Guillain Barré and also did tests for MS. Nothing was found and I was sent home. It returns from time to time to a lesser extent, usually after a viral illness.

No-one has ever been able to find out what's wrong, so now the nasties have been ruled out, I just put up with it and try not to worry any more.

Best of luck Flowers

It sounds like allodynia to me. Have a google and see if this fits.

Just the same, it eases off like you say and back with a vengeance. As in my post above also getting lots of pins and needles and other numb sensations in other places too.
can’t remember if I mentioned here that all my skin started peeling off last week or the week before, on my torso?
after my chest skin was horrible, itchy and blistery.
I haven’t mentioned the skin peeling to the gp but she wasn’t bothered about any of the other things!

I guess shingles gonna shingle and keep on shingling

I’ve had a thing for quite a few years behind one ear periodically that sounds like possible allodynia

Do you think the chest rash was the shingles rash then?

I still haven’t had any visible changes to my skin at all, just the constant sunburn feeling. Definitely feels how I imagine shingles feels

When it first started I panicked thinking it may be Guillian Barre but thankfully it’s just stayed in one leg for nearly 6 months!

It did kick off after a flu type thing.

I don’t know, I have such a fudged immune system that I tend to come down with multiple things all at once. I tried to show my chest rash but it garnered zero interest 🤣🫣
you can have shingles without any rash at all, mine was extremely mild on my side and disappeared as soon as I started the antivirals but the tingling has been going on for ever and it feels exactly like when I’ve had shingles before , another time I was incredibly run down

tinkersfig · 01/11/2025 15:09

@Jellyheadbang I’m probably going to jinx myself again, but I’ve had 3 good days of barely anything sensation wise.

How are you doing?

Ooh that’s good news! Have you done anything different?
still the same here, it’s absolutely torturous, I’m hoping it dissipates asap!
Hope yours stays away

@Jellyheadbang just wanted to see how your skin sensation was? Mine has 97% gone after taking a 2000mg lysine supplement!

OP posts:
TheSixthBestOption · 09/12/2025 23:20

How did you know to take lysine?

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 09/12/2025 23:50

Don’t know if I posted on this at the time, but it sounds a lot like the sensation I had before I got B12 injections. They then stopped my injections as they said my levels were high enough and no intrinsic factor antibodies so I didn’t qualify for them. My levels dropped again (obviously!) but I now take B12 sublingual lozenges (Jarrow ones from Amazon) which do the same job but without the pain of the injections. Worth a try if your levels are still at the low end of normal. Mine was also just within normal range but I felt so much better and the weird numbness and tingling stopped once my levels were up at 900 so I’m sceptical about their ‘normal’ range tbh.

Ooh that’s amazing! Mine is still here! Great news about the lysine. How and when do you take it? Any links, names etc gratefully received!

How did you know to take lysine?

I was convinced it was shingles related but antiviral medication did nothing. I did a lot of research and lysine is a herpes virus inhibitor.

It may be a coincidence, but I had nerve condition tests, all kinds of blood tests and nothing showed up.

I still get the odd sensation most days, but a few weeks ago it was constant and I was struggling to wear pants!

i just take one a day on an empty stomach. It’s just an amino acid that we eat everyday in our food, but like I said below, I was convince it was shingles without the rash and it seems to have definitely helped.

May be a placebo but I don’t care!

I hope so too! I’m lying here and hating it because it’s still weird down one side.
its really prominent when I’m lying down and breathing in and out when there’s loose fabric on me!
I can’t remember if I said I was prescribed amitriptyline to help the nerve pain? It’s been a while now and it hasn’t changed anything

TeaandHobnobs · 11/12/2025 23:27

@tinkersfig have you plotted your symptoms
against your cycle? I was just struck reading your thread that you seemed to have a few days a month where if gets a lot better, then deteriorated again - if it ties in with your cycle then I do wonder if there is a hormonal element at play?

I did try and see if there was a pattern, but I couldn’t see one. Although when I was researching it to death, perimenopause seemed to come up a lot.

Typically I have a little bit of the sensation tonight, but nothing like it was. I feel like it’s some sort of irritation to one of the nerves that covers the sciatic nerve, pudendal and femoral cutaneous nerves. I’m practically a leg nerve map expert now!
