Satanic nighttime cough!

I’m pleading for tips!

Every time I get even a mild cold, I get the worst nighttime cough that lasts for weeks. It has me up all night and is so loud and aggressive my partner has to sleep on the sofa for weeks on end.

I’ve got mild asthma, I take my preventative inhaler daily and when I’ve got these coughs I also take the reliever. It doesn’t feel a particularly asthmatic cough though, I’m not wheezy and in the day time I barely cough and can exercise ok etc. I do refrain from exercise when I have them in case it makes it worse.

I will go all day without coughing and then in the evening around 8-9pm it’ll start. I regularly try:
Night nurse
Antihistamine
Steroid nasal spray
Vicks on chest and soles of feet
Vicks vapour machine
Lots of pillows for elevation

Nothing works. I’ve seen the doctor several times and always told it’s viral, occasionally they will give me steroid tablets in case it is linked to asthma, but they never help.

I’ve never smoked and am otherwise fit and well.

Please help!

Sincerely, desperately tired and fed up.

I recommend the book: The Chronic Cough Enigma.

Have you tried increasing your preventer the minute you feel yourself coming down with the cold?

Also, get an appointment with a specialist HCP. I've always had excellent advice and support from the Asthma Nurse at my GP surgery, whereas asthma-related advice from the GP can be a bit hit-and-miss.
