Red sore skin in both armpits - help!

Chick981 · 14/08/2025 22:27

Anyone got any idea what could help relieve the soreness from two very painful armpits?

I think the rash has been causing by shaving/ chafing / sweating in the heatwave.

Doctor can’t see me until Wednesday and we go on holiday at the weekend. Saw a pharmacist today and they wouldn’t look at rash but sold me a steroid cream, which stings like hell when I put it on.

It really is very painful on both sides. Was a bit sore on Monday when I shaved, but it was overnight last night that it suddenly flared up as super red and angry and painful

Sudocream may help but it could be thrush so you will need an anti fungal cream (buy some canesten). It could also be eczema so you’ll need hydrocortisone to treat it if so.

Chick981 · 14/08/2025 22:33

@REDB99 Thank you. Google suggested either hydrocortisone which the pharmacist gave me or an anti fungal cream, but without anyone seeing it it’s hard to know which I should be using.

Start with hydrocortisone and if it doesn't work try the anti fungal?

Beamur · 14/08/2025 22:35

Stop shaving for now too

Chick981 · 14/08/2025 22:38

@Beamur I definitely will…. Typical just before a holiday! No deodorant for me tomorrow either, good job I’m working from home.

Try a different pharmacy to see is someone will take a look at it. All the ones near me have cubicles to discuss things in private so it’s a bit odd that they would sell you a cream for a rash they hadn’t seen.

Or, take very clear photos of the rash and go back to the original pharmacy and tell them what they gave you stings badly and it’s getting worse and you would like a second opinion.

I've had this too! All I can point it to is picking up a 48 hour mitchum roll on at the air port. I've not used that type before and now my normal mitchum is causing issues too.

Found an old dove deodorant at the back of the cupboard and that has almost instantly solved the problem

I don't know if mitchum have changed the ingredients or if a dodgy razor blade + something in the mitchum has cause it.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/08/2025 22:44

I had something similar about 45 years ago. The GP, when you could see a GP for minor things, told me to buy some camillosan. (Nipple cream). It worked.

Have y changed your soap/shwr gel/bath cream at all? Or your soap powder?

Chick981 · 14/08/2025 22:47

@Conversensational interesting, it’s Mitchum that I use! And I think what triggered it was shaving then putting deo on literally straight away as I was in a l rush to get out the house.

I use this if I get a rash under my bust when it's hot and sweaty. Works so well, it cools and heals the rash. Recommended to a friend who was suffering and they said it's been a lifesaver. Hope it helps.

Have you any caneston cream? Betnovate, even better.

Inspirationpending · 14/08/2025 23:20

Oh weird as I’m also a Mitchum user and have had sore armpits recently
Switched deodorant today after days of sudocrem and no shaving and it’s definitely easing

Same. These deodorants are too strong. I use a normal one now and pat with talc afterwards.

Me too!!!! I have used Mitchum forever and just had this the last month or so, changed back to dove and it went away immediately. I thought maybe it was a new formulation?

Handeyethingyowl · 14/08/2025 23:44

You could try La Roche Posay Ciclaste Baum, it cures any skin irritation I have had almost instantly.

MoonWoman69 · 14/08/2025 23:46

Looks a bit like thrush to me. I had this once, Canestan cream got rid of it. Heat, moisture and bacteria combined causes it.
I feel your pain!

Chickyhip · 14/08/2025 23:47

I also have really sore and itchy armpits after using a new Mitchum roll-on! I’ve used it for years and never had this before. There must be a link!

Peaceisenough · 14/08/2025 23:50

It’s the aluminium compounds that are causing the reactions.

Baconmanor · 14/08/2025 23:52

Mine was also a roll on. Looking back on Mumsnet there are a fair few threads about this with Mitchum but I’ve only noticed it lately. Solidarity to all women sat in bed with sudocrem on their pits tonight, actually rather comforted to read this thread as I thought this was perhaps another perimenopause symptom I’d never heard about.

Got to love mumsnet for this exact thing, the solidarity. It’s got me through some stuff I was dealing with (what I presumed was alone).

I did momentarily consider swiping my dd's wild or pitrok deodorant but dove seems to be ok for now. I can't be doing walking around with wet pit stains.

eleanorwish · 15/08/2025 07:36

Also a Mitchum user with the exact same problem. Been using it for years! Will switch back to Dove.

Conversensational · 15/08/2025 08:32

Well I've shaved today and used dove and the burning stinging sensation from hell has not appeared so I'm blaming the mitchum rather than the razor.

I'm gutted as mitchum is the only thing that makes me not whiff I think. Especially around my period.

ImWearingPantaloons · 15/08/2025 08:38

I get that on the edges of my right armpit (just the right side..) when I use ‘normal’ anti perspirant.

I use double base gel on it, stored in the fridge. Calms it right down.

BensonSVU · 15/08/2025 08:39

I had this from using Mitchum deodorant
