Red sore skin in both armpits - help!

Chick981 · 14/08/2025 22:27

Anyone got any idea what could help relieve the soreness from two very painful armpits?

I think the rash has been causing by shaving/ chafing / sweating in the heatwave.

Doctor can’t see me until Wednesday and we go on holiday at the weekend. Saw a pharmacist today and they wouldn’t look at rash but sold me a steroid cream, which stings like hell when I put it on.

It really is very painful on both sides. Was a bit sore on Monday when I shaved, but it was overnight last night that it suddenly flared up as super red and angry and painful

I’m another one who recently switched to using Mitchum deodorant and had this happen. I’ve gone back to my usual Aldi deodorant and it cleared up within 2 days. Myself and my daughter used Mitchum for years in the past without issue.

Musicaltheatremum · 15/08/2025 08:49

I use mitchum too and had this problem earlier in the week but actually attributed it to the style of the sleeves on my dress rubbing along with being quite sweaty having been in a really warm hospital on Tuesday. I popped hydrocortisone on at night and it was better in the morning and hasn't come back.

SomethingAboutNothing · 15/08/2025 08:56

I've used michum for years but suddenly also had the same problem after starting a new bottle, it smells different too.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 15/08/2025 08:59

My husband gets a similar problem, armpit-wise, and he uses medicated talc as well.
His might be heat rash, mind you.
I second the advice of a PP, to see a different pharmacist who will actually have a proper look at you.
My pharmacist is excellent, she’s prescribed antibiotics for my son a couple of times.

He uses Cuticura and says it works every time.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 15/08/2025 09:26

I’ve had this twice. The skin eventually turned black and very thick and peeled off. Which I admit I helped with. Very painful - couldn’t raise my arms.

Oneearringlost · 15/08/2025 09:54

You can get Canesten HC over the counter, that is combined steroid and anti fungal cream.

MoonWoman69 · 15/08/2025 10:25

That's odd! I stopped using Dove because it made me itch and didn't work effectively as a deodorant! And I've gone onto Mitchum spray with no problems! But then our bodies are all different, different skin chemicals. I've had perfume that's smelt lovely as a tester, then hideous when I've bought it! And Pit Rock didn't work at all for me, that was a waste of good money!

eleanorwish · 15/08/2025 14:04

Just compared the ingredients on my Mitchum with an old one of my daughters, there’s definitely some extra ingredients in the new one, acetyl cedrene and hexamethylindonpyran.

soupyspoon · 15/08/2025 14:49

I have to use Dove for a while after this sort of thing but I did also recently use Mitchum, just bog standard, not 48 hour or anything and also had a lot of itching

Chick981 · 15/08/2025 21:10

That’s interesting, I’m definitely going to try some other brands. The steroid cream seems to have kicked in and I’m a lot less sore today.

Love the solidarity of MNers sitting with sudocream in their pits, that was my first move when it started.

Thanks everyone

I've had this from Mitchum, Sure and Nivea deodorant. Sanex is the only one I can use now.

Kayybee · 05/09/2025 22:45

Oh my goodness, this is mad! My sister and I have just been chatting and found out we’ve both had the same armpit redness and soreness in the past month! We’ve used Mitchum for years but have both recently bought a new one so it really must be down to something different in the formula!

oustedbymymate · 05/09/2025 23:05

I’ve only just seen this but I also usually use Mitchum no bother and have also had this recently. It was so bloody sore!! I’ve stopped using Mitchum now (I’ve also got stains all over my clothes in the armpits where I never have before). I’m using fussy now and no problems.

Conversensational · 06/09/2025 08:11

Well I've been using dove stick since this and no issues. I much prefer mitchum though because with the dove I wake up in the morning and feel stinky. Dh says I don't smell but I think I can smell a slight offness compared to the mitchum. So they need to sort this out!

CaroleLandis · 06/09/2025 08:24

Buy some bite cream with hydrocortisone in it.

stayathomer · 06/09/2025 08:27

We were recently advised sudocream for eczema and it helped soothe and calm it down (edited to add we used with a particular avene product for the moisturising part but can’t get to the name this second but just in case someone is wondering) which I’d never have guessed so actually no matter what I think you might be safe trying that first

FeatheryFlorence · 06/09/2025 08:51

@Conversensational wash your armpits with Hibiscrub if you are prone to getting whiffy. It helps hugely.

I use dettol soap in the mornings. I don't think I am to other people but I have a sensitive nose and very paranoid that I don't want to be one of those people you walk past and die from the smell of their polyester and bo combination.

Gingernaut · 06/09/2025 09:00

Stop using perfumed products - Sorry, this will mean you will smell for a while

Smack it with a barrier/nappy cream and antifungals - Hit the foot care aisle and buy a variety of them

Keep the area covered with a tight fitting top with sleeves, so that the skin doesn't rub

24Dogcuddler · 06/09/2025 09:02

So glad I found this. Another long term Mitchum user with sore armpits after buying a new one! Also been using Sudocrem.
Never thought of the ingredients changing even though I was quick to suggest this to my daughter when she was getting a rash after using her
“ usual” foundation.
Thanks everyone

Kaleidoscope101 · 06/09/2025 09:06

Another long term (years) mitchum roll on user here and I have the same problem 😩.
Will be getting a different roll on today.

NewNameNewMeNow · 06/09/2025 09:31

There are dozens of people on tiktok complaining about this too. Apparently not many are actually letting Mitchum know. You really should because they are denying it is a widescale problem.

knackeredmu · 06/09/2025 09:35

Flag it to Mitchum as it could be a simple change in their formula such as the perfume or other components that you're reacting to - deodorant sensitivity is taken seriously by the big manufacturers

Mydahliasareshit · 06/09/2025 09:50

I had this flare up under my arms after a covid jab.
Lymph system doing it's work apparently, but it was very upsetting till it passed.

Sallysinnermum · 06/09/2025 09:54

Another user of Mitchum for years and suddenly sore, itchy armpits. My sister too! Off to tell her we're not alone! Hope you got sorted before your holiday OP!
