Perianal abscess

Any advice on what to do if the aquacell packing for a Perianal abscess wound falls out more than 12 hours before the next dressing change?I’m really concerned it’s going to close up.

I have been having daily appointments to pack the wound for the last two weeks and it is now 0.5cm in depth and 0.8cm in width.

I’ve been really struggling with the aqua cell packing falling out and keeping the dressing dry because of where the drained Perianal abscess is and it falls out most evenings (about 12 hours after daily packing)! Any advice appreciated.

I don’t have any medical advice OP, but that sounds sore. I’ve only ever dealt with fissures. I hope someone comes along soon and can help. Perhaps ask ChatGPT in the meantime - it can be very helpful with medical issues. Good luck.

Hi just in case someone comes back here and has the same query as me in the future. The practice nurse reassured me that it was fine that the aqua cell packing had fallen out and in fact it is to be expected because of the location of the wound.

I kept the wound covered until I saw her to have the wound repacked.

Other tips are: If you are having daily packings and wound dressing try to find a dressing that suits you. I liked both the mepilex border comfort and allevyn gentle border as they’re both padded and seemed to be water resistant (although they couldn’t take the shower. But your practice nurse should be advising you!

Hi @Vano how was your recovery?
a friend of mine had surgery recently but they didn’t pack it as they said research shows it makes no difference but she has a big open wound 🙄
