Currently in hospital, working theory is that I have meningitis, they want me to have a lumbar puncture to give a definitive diagnosis, I am alone and feeling very scared, please give me your positive stories

I have had endless investigations involving all sorts of needles. I have had a lumbar puncture, done by a clinical nurse specialist (does them all day, every day) and it was absolutely fine. Less uncomfortable than many of the other procedures I have had. You just have to keep still and they will ask you if anything hurts anywhere. I think I had to lie down for a while afterwards and drink plenty.

I’ve had 4 lumbar punctures , two for meningitis.

it’s honestly nothing to worry about, hope everything goes well OP.

an LP shouldn’t be anything to worry about - the procedure’s essentially the same as having a spinal anaesthetic if you’ve had one of those before (taking samples out though instead injecting anaesthetic though) - we do hundreds and hundreds of them every day (lots on labour ward, lots for other operations, lots for diagnostic reasons) & most people don’t find it too terrible.

Thanks very much, I read some negative things about LP so really needed something of the opposite. But I really want to get out of here and back to my baby, he’s 18 months but this might spell the end of our BF journey and I’m feeling very sad, but also very very unwell and I know I needed to come to hospital. I just want to go home
