Extremely bloodshot eye - pharmacist?

Picture attached.

Do I need to see a doctor or will a pharmacist do? Or, can I just ignore it. No pain or discomfort, just looks rather nasty.

Extremely bloodshot eye - pharmacist?

High street optician is the best person to see. They have all the right equipment and know about eyes.

sarsaparillatree · 02/08/2025 15:48

Looks like a subconjunctival hemorrhage, which are harmless. If it doesn't itch and isn't painful it should gradually fade away.
I have had one myself - it looks really yucky and then goes all brownist like a bruise as it fades.
Maybe ask a pharmacist if it needs expert attention if it's bothering you?

This. Ideally you need to see an optician to check it’s fine.

hardtocare · 02/08/2025 16:47

Optician for sure. They checked mine. They also advised me to see the practice nurse for a follow up blood pressure check

AgualusasLover · 03/08/2025 00:03

Thanks everyone. The opticians close by was shut, but the pharmacy gave me
some drops and wipes and said if it hasn’t cleared or if it starts to cause discomfort by Tuesday then to go back or to the opticians or GP.

It isn’t causing any problems, but has spread to under my iris now. Keeping a close eye and will go and get it chxecked if no improvement on Monday I think.

Is there no soecsavers near you?! They will be open tomorrow. I would definitely go and get it checked.

ducksfizz · 03/08/2025 16:48

I’ve had one. It will definitely get worse before better so be prepared for that. It’ll then start going yellow/brown before disappearing after a few weeks. It’s a burst blood vessel.

jetlag92 · 03/08/2025 18:13

It's definitely just a subconjunctival haemorrhage, you don't need to see anyone about it. (Optometrist). It's just one of those things where a little tiny bit of blood for a burst blood vessel gets spread along the tight junction between conjunctival layers.

Have you had one before?

AgualusasLover · 03/08/2025 19:46

No, never had one before. I sent a picture to a friend who is an optometrist and largely said the same as most of the advice here.

It’s still not bothering me at all.

@AgualusasLover hello. I’ve woken up with one of these this morning. Did you ever have another one? I haven’t had one before and it’s freaking me out!

Nofksleft2give · 14/12/2025 08:58

Go to an optician. They have the correct equipment to look at your eye. Pharmacist/gp don't have the same gear.

Soony · 14/12/2025 15:38

I've had it a few times. If it doesn't hurt or itch just ignore and it will go away. Otherwise see an optician.

user789264 · 14/12/2025 16:38

@Soonydid you ever get an explanation for it or see anyone about it? And did yours just crop up overnight? I went to sleep and woke up like it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Musicaltheatremum · 14/12/2025 18:32

I saw loads of these as a GP. used to check their blood pressure and reassure. Usually it appeared after a night's sleep.
Never found anyone with high blood pressure that could have caused it nor any bleeding disorders.
It couod be traumatic from eye rubbing in sleep but never really found any cause. Pharmacists often gave antibiotics once they could prescribe but totally unnecessary.

user789264 · 14/12/2025 19:33

@Musicaltheatremum thanks for commenting. I actually checked my blood pressure (have a machine at home) and have never had any issues with my blood pressure either. It was bang on fine. I've got an appointment with an optician on Tuesday, just to be on the safe side. I'd feel more ok about it if I'd got a reason for it, but just weird to have woken up like it!

I didn't see anyone the first couple of times and it just went away. I had a lot going on health wise and it didn't seem important in the great scheme of things.
Last time it happened it was after an infusion for osteoporosis and my eyes itched like 10000 ants were crawling. I guess I rubbed them, the itching and bloodshot area was so bad I went to an optician and they checked my eyes and gave me drops to sooth the itch. It took a few days to go away.

@Soonythank you for replying. I appreciate it. Hope you got everything under control in the end 😊
