UTI?

When you know you really shouldn’t look at Google for health symptoms …….

Have had to urinate a lot more frequently over the last few days, bit of urgency as I’ve “had” to go as soon as I’ve had the feeling I need to. No pain, no stomach ache, no unusual odour from urine etc.

Have never had a UTI or cystitis in my life so wasn’t really sure what it was. Bought some urine test strips today which have shown totally normal for Nitrates but increased Leucocytes.

Checked all this online which shows no bacterial infection if no Nitrates present, but then went into the realms of types of cancers and lots of other things leading to increased Leucocytes. Some of the cancer symptoms are also increased sweating which give got (but put down to menopause) and tiredness (which I’d put down to end of term teacher tired).

now panicking as it’s late at night, I’m a worrier as it is and due to go on holiday Monday but now think I’ve got something serious. Any words of wisdom from anyone who’s had increased Leucocytes in urine samples? Thanks.

I have regular urine infections and my infection marker (white cell count - leukocytes) is always high even when I don’t have symptoms, it’s the same when I have a blood test. So it’s common for me.

If you’re worried about being ill on holiday you can buy nitrofurantoin which is usually used to treat UTIs through most pharmacies. But still worth getting everything checked out when you get home from your holiday.

Its most likely end of term fatigue and the menopause - my deepest sympathies!

If I took every diagnosis I’ve worked out online as fact I’d be a medical marvel by now. I got worked up a few months ago when I found a lump at the top of my neck. I was convinced I had some horrid lymph node tumour but my (very lovely) GP assured me that it was a piece of skull bone and an ear infection. Steroids cleared it up in a week either way.

Have a lovely holiday!

Thank you @Celeryedition. I’m going to go to the Pharmacy this morning and see if they can prescribe something.

i usually take some Cystopurin (or boots own brand equivalent) with me as a preventative measure if I’m worried about a UTI around holiday time. I take one every morning before breakfast. Not sure it does anything to help but it stops me worrying which is 95% of the battle.

Hope everything works out for you!

I suffer from recurrent UTIs, and have and positive infection cultures without positive nitrites on the dip. Negative nitrites doesn’t necessarily mean no infection. Some types of bacteria don’t result in nitrites, so don’t let a doctor (or the internet!) fob you off with that information. My latest infection was enterrococcus, and the nitrites were negative on the dip.

Thanks both. Saw a Pharmacist yesterday and they prescribed a course of antibiotics.
