1o month old and mobile - ish - but has a very big belly - protudes out and trousers of one year old barely close

legs seem fine

do babies have bellies for a while?? - may seem stupid but we are worried re creating an obese baby

will weigh him this week if can but so far seems on an ok curve - at high end

big belly but arms and legs seem ok - just that no trousers fit

bulging profile to say the least

is this normal?

or wind? or something else?

should be fine. there isn't room for all internal organs inside tiny body, hence bulgy front.

PortAndLemon · 26/05/2008 18:11

Bellies are big for quite a while apart from anything else, the liver is disproportionately large until they are quite a bit older. It doesn't sound as though you have a problem just buy a larger size and roll up the legs for a while.

thanks for that - dont see many other babies so no clue at all

DD is teensy but has a lovely belly - helps me know she's had a good meal when it sticks out a bit

bumbly · 27/05/2008 10:59

lo has one that sticks out all the time!

DS2 is just like this.
His trousers and nappies all sit underneath his belly like a bloke with a beer belly! We often leave the button undone.

DP says he gets it from mummy

It does seem to be going down a bit now that he is just 2 and getting taller though!

itwasntme · 27/05/2008 11:06

DD was like this until she was 2-ish

She's tiny round the waist now at 4

missorinoco · 27/05/2008 11:08

my ds looks like buddha! (12mths)

Nellstar · 27/05/2008 11:13

My ds (15 months) has huge sweet pot belly too. We sometimes worry too, but I was quite a chubster when a baby although both DH and I on the skinny side now, so I'm sure all will diminish in time!

iheartdusty · 27/05/2008 11:17

dungarees are good for baby bellies

anneme · 27/05/2008 11:22

Try clothes for babies with cloth nappies - cut4cloth - they are good for LO's who are less little! I ended up at the GPs in a real state about DS1 after FIL (a dr who should know better) commented that he was overeating (at 1 year old!!) my GP got really angry that anyone could say that to me. As long as your child is on a relatively healthy diet and is not being dripfed cola with a pepsi chaser I would not worry. DS1 is now 4 and tall for his age but not fat.

anneme · 27/05/2008 11:23

Just reread OP - I thought it was normal not be able to do the buttons up on LO's trousers - have not been able to with either of mine!!

TotalChaos · 27/05/2008 11:26

agree with port and lemon - that it's because of the space the organs take up.

Egg · 27/05/2008 11:27

My DS1 always has a big belly. When I was heavily pregnant with DTs our bellies looked alike, but his limbs etc are all a normal size. He loves his tummy!

figroll · 27/05/2008 12:00

I was looking at pictures yesterday of my 12 year old's pot belly at the age of one. It hung over her nappy and she was soooo fat.

Jump forward 11 years and she is as skinny as a lath.

SydneyB · 27/05/2008 12:20

I thought that also they don't develop their stomach muscles until a lot later so there's nothing to hold it in! Really shouldn't worry about this kind of thing if you're feeding them a healthy diet. They've got a lifetime of weight issues ahead of them..
