cough situation

baba had a cough on and off for the past month - no temperature, is happy and still hungry but since the weekend had gone, baba's cough is worse and is like choking on her cough - sounds like her chest is full of phelgm. i took her to docs this morning and docs said its not on her chest so her chest is clear!! so its in the back of her throat - is there anything i can give to her to relieve it?

If cough accompanied by a runny nose, which may then be trickling down the back of the throat, Medised is v good. Can be used from 3m+. Also good for sore throats, teething etc. Its a mixture of antihistamines and paracetamol I think and available over the counter at chemists. Antihistamines also helps with the sleeping. One word of warning - it doesn't taste very nice and I had to use a syringe when giving it to my lo. HTH

Can you not just leave it and give time for your dd to recover? ...or is it causing some problems like broken sleep etc?

Both my kids have had long term cold / cough things over the winter as babies and young toddlers and came through it okay.
You might have to accept that time will heal.....

no broken sleep at all, it just she chokes on her phelgm and her cough is really bad

Don't wish to appear unsympathetic to you BigLips - you're a first time mum with a new baby and having been there 2.5 years ago I know that something like this is a big worry. Just mean to reassure you - yes her cough sounds terrible but she will get better. Plus my doctor has always said to me - how is the baby / child in herself? - if she is relatively content, feeding well etc then there is no cause for concern. If however she is lethargic or distressed, refusing milk etc then its an issue.

Is her breathing quite clear? presumably it is?

yeah suppose i am worrying abit . she is happy and her breathing is clear and she is herself, just a choking cough. just trying to help her really

Just belatedly thought of something. Coughs tend to ease abit in a humid environment and are worse in a dry environment. So when dd or ds have a particularly nasty cough I tend to boil a kettle with the lid off in the room (in the living room if that is where we are during the day or in their bedroom at night)

It gets really steamy but it does seem to help

thanks - ill try that today as i think its the cough bug been going round for the past couple of weeks cos i dont smoke but ive had mine for ages now and is slowly going away.

this is apparently quite common. DS had the same kind of thing when he was very small and the doctor said it was nothing and there was nothing apparent on his lungs. It cleared up by about 6ths as far as I can remember.

well, baba did have that cough and last week she coughs up loads of phelgm and got a snuffly, runny nose, otherwise she is still happy and no temp. what med is the best for that pls?
