has anyone done this? sounds gross but does it work?

basically it's swilling a load of sunflower oil in your mouth for 20 minutes to pull toxins out of your body.

It sounds like revolting nonsense.

What exactly is the science behind it ?

NomDePlume · 25/05/2008 16:41

(aside from making you vomit, of course)

JackieNo · 25/05/2008 16:51

Yeuch. Sounds vile.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 16:51

lol it does sound daft but there are so many testimonials on the net that it's worked for people.

'Swishing activates the enzymes and the enzymes draw toxins out of the blood. The oil must not be swallowed, for it has become toxic. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. If the oil is still yellow, it has not been pulled long enough. It is then spit from the mouth'

I was just on that very website - v strange. Claims it can cure cancer and aids. I think I'd mistrust it on the basis of 'if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is', I'm afraid.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 17:12

seems alot of tosh doesn't it. i was looking for something to cure my sinusitus. still swilling it around my mouth now as an experiment.

I did find the Skeptics Society forum page on it, but even that's not really conclusive. Have to say, it's probably not going to do you any harm, is it. Let us know how it goes.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 17:39

it's not that bad to do, but just feel really weak now, but that's probably because i couldn't talk for 20 minutes. will try again later.

OP posts:
moondog · 25/05/2008 17:41

SEA, you have lost it.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 17:50

lol md, it's something to do isn't it

Are your teeth all oily now? Someone on that skeptics thread pointed out that in order to remove the oil from your mouth, you'd be brushing your teeth a lot longer, which could account for the improvements in gum health and whiter teeth.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 18:00

no they're not at all and i didn't brush them much.

someone on that skeptic site said it got rid of their husbands grey hair! dp doesn't want to try it though.

Would it work with olive oil?

I only have olive oil atm, and am willing to give it a go and report back.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 18:32

yes think that's ok, have a go fou

OP posts:
southeastastra · 25/05/2008 20:43

did you frou?

OP posts:
Fou · 25/05/2008 20:47

Not yet... I need to find 20 mins when I don't need to talk!

JackieNo · 25/05/2008 20:50

According to the oilpulling website, "Sunflower and Sesame oil have been found to be equally effective in curing diseases. Other oils were not found to be as good. Do not blame oil pulling by practicing with other oils. Use refined oils. ". So probably not olive.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 20:52

there are whole forums devoted to which oil is best i discovered this afternoon jackie.

it's weird.

OP posts:
JackieNo · 25/05/2008 20:53

Really . I just looked at that one, and the skeptics one, so didn't realise that.

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 20:58

a bloke on youtube tested it out for his psoriasis and it didn't work

i really can't see how it works but i did feel washed out after doing it. maybe i'm gullible though

Pulling toxins out of the body - your liver and kidneys are busy working on this 24/7

Enzymes in your mouth - yes, there are enzymes in saliva. They start the breakdown of starch. They have no relevance to "toxins".

The oil gets thinner and white because it is forming an emulsion with your saliva - not because it has reacted with toxins.

NigellaTheUndomesticGoddess · 25/05/2008 21:19

what a load of shite

southeastastra · 25/05/2008 21:21

hmm the testimonies are very convincing

OP posts:
emma1977 · 25/05/2008 21:30

Does it work with white wine?

NigellaTheUndomesticGoddess · 25/05/2008 21:32

damn sure red wine works the same
