Removal or root canal

My tooth cracked and I've been to the dentist as it became very swollen
The dentist said about having root canal however I've not heard great things about it. Would it be better to have an extraction?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: you can't leave a void. If you have a gap in your mouth then the tooth opposite it will start to grow upwards and become pronounced. You will have to have something in the gap which at a minimum would be dentures.

I recently had to make this choice and went with the root canal. If it fails then ah well, you'll have to get a denture anyway. Mine was successful and having a crown fitted. The dentist explained if I went for just removal then I would need to have a much more expensive denture or implant.

Depends where the tooth is. I had root canal on a front side tooth and I found it an awful process. I had a wisdom tooth removed and it was nowhere near as bad x

I've had about 4 root canal fillings. 2 were back teeth. 2 were cracked teeth. I would go down the root canal route. I haven't had any of mine fail and some were done years ago. As long as you trust youŕ dentist who should have a long experience of carrying out periodontal work. The canal will be cleaned out and the nerve/s removed uder anaesthetic. You will have antibiotics. When you return the tooth will be flushed out and the tooth will be prepared for a temporary crown which will be fitted while the crafted porcelain or resin and metal cored crown is made. A good dentist will get this right and the crowned tooth will match and look good. If you don't have this work and opt for an extraction you will need a denture or a bridge ..or have to live with a gap in your mouth which looks hideous. I would never spend money on botox, fillers , nails, tatts or whitening but teeth are yours for life and worth treating well. Go for root canal.
