Horse flies - deterrent for humans that is pet safe?

Currently on the lookout for some spray or other horse fly deterrent that won't affect my dogs if they, for example, lick my hard, arm, etc when I've applied a a suitable horse fly spray. Any ideas please?

Only thing that's ever beaten the evil fuckers in my experience has been clothing.

I use a deet based equine spray and just spray it on my clothing
