Brain fog/memory loss during period

Not every month, but I’ve had incidences of brain fog for a few hours and it always seems to happen during my period. I text people then forget I have, feel generally not with it and can’t remember what I’ve just done, then it passes. I had similar years ago when I had Covid the first time. When it happened last year I went to the GP who sent me to the stroke clinic but that was ruled out. I’ve read it could be a pre-migraine symptom which makes sense as I sometimes get funny vision/aura but I don’t then get the pain of a migraine.

Has anyone experienced similar?

I have been feeling this a lot over the last 6 months, I’ve always had PMS symptoms before my period was due for about 10 days.
but the last few months I feel so overwhelmed, almost unable to do my normal day to day activities/job.

I struggle with fatigue and literally forget words, even when in the middle of the conversation.

I have had to write down lists to remind me what I’m doing that day, for a good 7 days I feel like I can’t give 100% to anything. I get anxiety about doing anything social because I don’t know whether my brain will function through a conversation.

I had recent blood test which showed low B12, I am trying to find a solution to get through it monthly. So far, I’ve had to reduce my weekly plans the week before, focusing on what I have control of for that week. Reduced socialising and ensuring I find time to relax.

Have you had your iron and B12 levels checked?

Penelopetu · 18/06/2025 21:40

The fact that it’s only during my period makes me think it’s hormonal rather than a B12 deficiency? Or could it be connected do you think?

Could you be having migraines? Brain fog and forgetfulness during migraines happens to me

Penelopetu · 18/06/2025 21:46

Yes @Bitchesbelike I think it’s part of my pre migraine aura (as I said in OP, I get funny vision too sometimes) and this would make sense with it being hormonally linked. I wonder if migraine meds would stop it even though I don’t actually get the pain of migraine..

That’s totally possible!! I get what is called “silent migraines” which is a migraine but no headache

How old are you?

I have started to get this, I’m 44 and peri-menopause.
