Eye laser/lens surgery gone wrong

Firstly don’t use Optical Express.

I had lens replacement surgery in Jan 2025. It’s been an awful awful recovery and I now have much worse vision than before.

My eyes and brain have not adapted to the new multifocal lens at all. My vision is one big blur and I have halos and glare and ghosting all of the time. I am not very depressed from this as I cannot see clearly at all. I only wore reading glasses before and I am a young late 40’s single mum.

This is a possible side effect only it’s rare. I seem to be the rare case.

My question is this, where do I go for the very very best surgeon in the UK to get this fixed?

I seriously don’t care how much money anymore I need to see again.

Get a referral to Moorfields.

I will add that I know 3 people that have had lens replacements with Optical Express. Two had issues afterwards but they were very quickly resolved.

Sorry this happened. Go to see Ali mearza at Ocl vision Harley street. The top eye surgeon around. He did my lens replacement a few years ago no problems at all and multi focal has worked so well for me.

So sorry for you. I am extremely short sighted -9.50 both eyes with a plus 2 reading add and retinal issues and I’d love to get my eyes done but stories like this make me so nervous. I’ve been researching for a while and it seems like you can’t go wrong with Moorfields. I’d contact them and go from there. It may be something easily fixable.

its not that it’s gone wrong it’s that my eyes and brain haven’t adapted. You can’t predict ’tolerance’.

I was -8.75 both eyes and plus 1.75 for reading and an astigmatism. I had both done at the same time and had sedation ( which was lovely) as I’m nervous patient. I did a lot of research for a couple of years on surgeons and clinics before going ahead. Feel free to dm for advice.

He did my eyes and is the very best surgeon for eye surgery. I researched extensively and he came out top every time.

My friend had an issue with a lens replacement. She’s now got a rainbow halo around objects and a weird sense of perspective, and struggles to drive at night. Hers can’t be fixed, apparently, something to do with irregular scarring.

Get a consultation with Vincenzo Maurino at Moorfields. I had ICL surgery in November and it has healed up well. I also had a consultation at Optical Express and they recommended lens replacement but Moorfields considered me too young (at 48) and ICL was preferred

Moorfields or OCL are my preferred option now. Thank you. The outcomes aren’t looking good after extensive reading on post op non tolerance, sadly.

I feel stupid for going for this. It was a risk and sadly I’m the minority that it didn’t work for.

You can actually for someone who is plano for distance - you just give them a trial of multifocal contact lenses - as they work in the same way.

In this study - only 77% of patients with your prescription (plano presbyopes) were satisfied with their surgery, which means 23% weren't! That's not rare.

Op I wonder why they did multi focal lens replacement when you are only in your 40’s and only needed glasses for reading.

I didn’t have a trial of the multi focal contacts I just went straight for the op.

Wow. If that’s known widely and they didn’t tell you I’d be suing. Not that that helps you much. I hope you get it sorted.

Since my stroke I have an issue with maculopathy in one eye. I have just been told they're going to make me an appointment at the hospital regarding treatment.

would any of you knowledgable people carry on with the hospital or woukd you go private.

i don't have any insurance to go private. Can't work due to the stroke, but eyes are so important?!!

Yes. Thank you. I’ll have a good read. The problem is now it’s not about suing or money or making a fuss. I just want to see without the disturbances.

I had a consultation with a different surgeon from OE on Monday, my options they suggest are :

1 - Try drops to contract pupils. That might force my eyes to uses less of the rings in the multi lens. This is short term. If it works I go to a reduced concentration. Side effects of these drops aren’t great, he already mentioned headaches.

2- if the above doesn’t work, go for a ‘Mono lens Plus’. I can’t get EDOF lenses as I’ve had a YAG. Too much risk. Although some surgeons in the US do this.

So depressing. Being a solo mum after my husband died last year is bad enough. Now this.

See Mr Merino at Moorfields if he is still there. We both had replacement lens surgery in 2016 and had no problems re recovery. However it took a good couple of years for our brains to adjust…much longer than we expected. Not a huge problem as effects were minimal, just irritating. Now I never even think about it. And after a lifetime of wearing specs and not getting on with contact lenses of all types it is fabulous!!!

I went to Moorfields after issues with an eye operation. We had insurance so we went private at Moorfields, however the insurers said it wasn’t covered. Moorfields got them to pay for everything. I ended up having 3 operations and lots of consultations. It was £9000 in total. Totally worth it. X

Thinking of you as my operations sent me into a spiral of intrusive thoughts and severe anxiety. Moorfields really helped me get through the other side. X
