Pharmacist just refused to sell me medised for my 3yr old!

I am so angry with her! I know the recommendations have changed and medised is no longer suitable for children under 2 but my DD is 3.

She said it was unsuitable for young children and produced a leaflet telling me how to deal with a cold (plenty of fluids, rest etc) FGS I'm not a bloody moron!!
It's not even a new formulation, the bottles on the shelf were the old 'from 3 months' stock.

I told her I knew the recommendations and had checked on the medised site. Had a row with her and stormed out in the end

i was a bit worried about this, misdee, because GP had said this could happen.

so i'd laid in a supply of Lucozade in case she went hyper and i needed to stay up, but between that and the Eurax creme she finally slept.

poor bug! the spots have only just now faded nearly 6 months on!

expatinscotland · 23/05/2008 22:48

that's true, HMC. that's why i buy one in one chemist and then find another and go in there when i absolutely have to use a chemist here.

misdee · 23/05/2008 22:51

it never happened to us fortunatly. but it was a worry.

dd3 had a bad case of chicken pox, and her back is scarred a fair bit from it.

handlemecarefully · 23/05/2008 22:51

I wonder what they think will happen if you use 2 decongestants at same time expat? - doubtless some nuclear fission type effect of the nasal septum

expatinscotland · 23/05/2008 22:53

oh, yes, i'm going to OD on nasal spray. yah, baby!

the first time i moved here i tried to buy two of something like that at once and the gal wouldn't sell them to me.

i said, 'you're kidding, right?'

she said, 'no.'

so i said, 'but i could buy this here and then go to the place next door and buy that?'

she said, 'yeah.'

um, okay.

wtf?!

chickenpox sucks, doesn't it?

those blisters were kind of gross, too.

expatinscotland · 23/05/2008 22:54

or when you go into a chemist and you look dog rough - puffy eyes, streaming nose all red on the ends from blowing, croaky voice and ask for cold medication and they ask, 'is it for you?'

nah, there's a leprechaun next to me, lady, can't you smell him?

pointydog · 23/05/2008 23:07

I think chicken pox reacts very badly with eczema. dd2's torso is covered with white pox scars that'll never go away

handlemecarefully · 23/05/2008 23:07

DD1 just has a few pink marks from it.

but DD2 actually has a couple of wee pitmarks from it, which are fortunately fading as well.

although today they both got attacked by midgies because someone Daddy forgot to spray them with Skin So Soft before taking them to the beach so they have little red pinprick midgie bite marks on their faces, too.

oh, yes, HMC, I got asked whilst picking up a prescription for Canesten, 'Is this for you?'

nah, the GP just made hte prescription out for me because DH was too embarrassed to admit he has a fetish for having Canesten bunged up his arse.

SlightlyMadSweet · 24/05/2008 20:11

Actually if you take 2 decongestants simulatenouslt you can OD on them.

YOu may as well take 2 doses of hte same one...it has the same effect - it is because the body sees them as the same.

And it doesn't matter if one is topical (i.e. squirted up the nose) and one is oral...they both get into teh bloodstream which is where the issue with side effects and OD is.

It is precisely this reason (supposedly) that medised & others have been withdrawn. People were (for the sake of argument) giving Tixylix and medised at the same time and were effectively ODing on the decongestant.

Hello Princess Peahead

I am an educated professional!! I work in healthcare and am a senior practitioner with an Msc in a helth fiels so am not daft you know!

However I am not a pharmacist or paediatrician hence why I specifically discussed the issue with my sons GP.

In my post I did not say I was giving him medised every night did I? I have purchased one bottle of medised in my sons life and it ran out just before the change of status cam in.

My son had frequent colds due to his attendaence at a nursery, not because I was giving him medised. Perhaps yu are in a fortunate position of not having to use child care but FYI children who do attend will ON AVERAGE contract NINE colds in the first year (statistically speaking)never mind the other bugs they might pick up.
If my son is exhausted and screaming because he cannot breath then as a mum I want to do what I can for him and the medised used occasionally was really helpful.

Posts like yours where you are attacking other mums without fully reading/understanding are not helpful.

advicepleasemums · 24/05/2008 20:32

Apologies for any readers of that post re typos)-computer keyboard REALLY playing up will have to sort it!

AitchTwoCiao · 24/05/2008 20:49

i really liked medised, saw it recommended on here and used it, loved it for when dd had a cold. i didn't use it every night but i did use it while she was teething so that was fairly often. that said, i don't think we've had two small bottles in her lifetime.
i personally think that the sedative effect was a bloody brilliant bonus and am seriously considering giving some to dd when we take a v v early flight on holiday next week. what's the big whoop, tbh? why all the fuss? if it's bad, ban it. if not, noses out please.

pointydog · 24/05/2008 21:00

nearly every drug is 'bad' to some extent. It can't be simplified to a good/bad level.

cantgetnosleep · 24/05/2008 21:05

Grr on your behalf-I had this yesterday with the pharmacist at Boots who refused to sell me cough medicine for my (huge-looks like a 3yr old but is nearly 2yrs). despite the fact that he was coughing his lungs out she patronisingly told me the new laws and said I should use plain cough syrup- that they did not stock in that branch! Advising me to go 5 miles to the larger branch!

I went to sainsburys and bought some no problem. I know the law has changed but if anything, I underdose with medicines and consider myself to be pretty clued up about these things. He has a streaming cold and tonight has coughed so hard he's nearly been sick (and up all last night coughing).

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 21:06

Drugs are good. Drugs are your friend.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 21:07

I learned long ago to lie to pharmacists here to get what I want. It's like being back at school where you just gave face to the teacher or your mum so she'd just shut up and let you go.

pointydog · 24/05/2008 21:07

drugs are yesterday

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 21:08

Better living through chemistry, says me.

Why suffer needlessly when drug companies have spent millions bringing you their products?

AitchTwoCiao · 24/05/2008 21:13

i'm with you, expat. i'm no hippy.

advicepleasemums · 24/05/2008 21:17

I second ATO and pointy

expatinscotland · 24/05/2008 21:19

No, I've definitely never been of the 'I had my leg amputated with with a rusty saw and only took paracetamol' mindset. I've got a fully stocked medicine cabinet.

It's like guns in Texas - better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

AitchTwoCiao · 24/05/2008 21:28

i think me and pointy aren't agreeing, though.

SlightlyMadSweet · 25/05/2008 08:20

Aitch...

"if it's bad, ban it. if not, noses out please.".

It has been baned (in a certain age group).

End of story.

Cantgetnosleep...The boots pharmacist was doing his job...the Sainsbury's one was breaking the law (assuming you were truthful about the age DC).

The MHRA who are the people who are qualified, and most importantly have been given the authority, to judge whether medcicines are safe or not have decided that medised is not safe in children under 2. They have passed that authority to the pharmacist.

So FGS Medised has been banned in under2's. The pharmacist has the authority not to sell it if he believes it to be used on a patient under 2. End of story.

Everyone on this thread (OK mostly me ) has the right to reflect those statements back as there is nothing untruthful there. So don't judge us for putting "our noses in" (not sure if that is what you meant aitch or whether that was wrt the pharmacist).

Equally those that are pro medised have the right to their opinion too - but please do not criticise those who are doing their jobs (e.g. pharmacist)or making truthful statements re the new law (on here).

SlightlyMadSweet · 25/05/2008 08:21

BTW that post was not aimed at the OP where her OP is old enough to have Medised. It relates to teh ensuing discussion.
