Anyone else get sudden upset stomach?

I’m 52 and since peri started (45) once or twice a month I’ll get a dodgy stomach. It’ll start as griping wind like pains in the centre of my stomach and I’ll have an urgent dash to the toilet where I’ll have watery, light coloured diahorrea. If I’m not near a toilet I’m in trouble as it’ll just leak out.

I’ve visited the GP, had fit tests, bloods, scans on my gallbladder, they cannot find anything wrong at all.

It’s often worse in the morning, sometimes it might come out of the blue in the afternoon. It often happens after eating something (no rhyme nor reason to this). All I know is I’m terrified as it happens out of the blue - I literally get a few pains and I need to go THEN.

I suppose this is IBS, I take Imodium if I feel the usual gurgling but sometimes it’s too late. Anyone else have this?

Have you had your gallbladder out?

Walkingwith · 11/06/2025 18:22

No I haven’t. I have felt like I’ve had a grumbling gallbladder at times, heaviness in my back and side on the right. I’ve also had twice a middle of the night episode of pain right under my breastbone that felt like what I’d think a gallstone attack was. Nothing found on a scan though.

I had this years ago. Like you sudden onset need to go to the loo and often felt quite vaso vagally too. Then absolutely fine until the next time which could be a day or a month no rhyme of reason.

What helped me was a weeks worth of metronidazole, the gp thought worth a try as all tests clear but maybe it was bacterial overgrowth. It worked for me maybe ask to try, no harm done if it doesn't work.

If that doesn't help try enterosgel it can 'mop up' overgrowth of bacteria.

Thanks. I’ve had this go on for a few yr now and have taken metronidazole a few times for my wisdom teeth. Unfortunately it’s still ongoing, the metronidazole didn’t make any difference

Edited

Yes people who have no gallbladder often have digestive issues, my mum and sister both had to run to the toilet any time they had anything fatty or a bit greasy. As they no longer had bile to help digest it so it just flew out.

Yes that makes sense
