Septoplasty and sense of smell/taste (or lack of!)

I had a septoplasty and nasal polyps removed in August last year. By December, I got my sense of smell back which was actually quite overwhelming to begin with as I hadn’t been able to smell or taste anything for so long! At the end of January this year, I got a cold, lost my sense of smell and taste again and it has never come back!

My nasal passages are clear as I use steroids and can breathe through my nose but my sinuses feel blocked and heavy.

I was lucky enough to go private through my work’s BUPA scheme and I’m thinking of contacting them to see if I can have an appointment with the surgeon. Lack of smell and taste is a risk of the op but the fact it came back, albeit for a short while, suggests there hasn’t been any damage.

Has anyone else experienced the same? Also, which nasal steroids do you take? I’m on Mometasone and wondering if I should switch to something else.

Covid hammered my sense of smell, I read the smelling fresh ground coffee can help get the sense back (I’m not sure on the science) but it seems to have helped me (it may have come back anyway and it was just co-incidence), but if you drink ground coffee I’d say you have nothing to lose!

I’ve got coffee pods and instant! 😆
