Pains and acid reflux

Mummy9431 · 06/06/2025 19:41

Over the past two months my acid reflux has completely upped its game .
they put me in 40mg of omezoperol.
its not working.
so I went to drs this morning and told her this..

Pain in breastbone
Left hand swelling in night
Pins and needles in both arms while sleeping
Back pain and in between shoulders
Lump in throat when eating and drinking causing chest pains
Shortness of breath
Flutters in throat
can feel acid coming up from my stomach.

she thinks I’ve got an ulcer in my stomach but I literally have no pain in my stomach at all.
it’s all from my throat to my breast bone.
blood done all normal and ecg done and normal.

any ideas? I’m going for camera down throat soon just wondered if I was my acid reflux causing everything rather than a stomach ulcer?

I had all of that. All from acid reflux overnight. No ulcer. Just agonising pain in the middle of my bra band area In the middle of my chest up.

I changed what I was eating and cut out all the crap. Stopped eating or drinking after 8pm. Just ate bland food. Nothing greasy or coke etc. All the things I presumed I was ok with but clearly wasnt.

All the problems have gone. It must have been my diet.

@RentalWoesNotFun
thank you for that! You’ve put my mind at ease loads.
my instincts are telling me that it’s all acid related.
i can’t literally feel it in my stomach traveling upwards.
i really can’t believe how much pain it can actually cause!

Well yes, it absolutely sounds like reflux. Maybe you have a hernia causing it - that’s what my gastroscopy found.

Worriedmrs · 06/06/2025 21:21

It is acid reflux. Omeprazole is alright but it takes a while to work fully. For night time issues take Gaviscon Advance. Take it last thing at night and don’t drink or eat anything after that. Another thing that helped me was sleeping on incline. I took my thickest pillow and kept it under my mattress (head side). It helped me breathe better as acid irritated my sinuses and caused breathing issues.

Picklingwalnuts · 06/06/2025 21:23

Apart from the swollen hand I suffer from all of those symptoms too.
Mine flared up when I went into perimenopause at 45 and I'm still struggling at 52.
I've tried so many things which aren't helping. Someone suggested slippery elm so I'm off to get some tomorrow.
The Acid Watchers diet book is also good.

RentalWoesNotFun · 06/06/2025 21:38

You might want to sleep on your left side to stop the acid coming up (your stomach doesnt sit in the middle of your body , the tube that comes out has a bend in it).

Get your b12 checked out re pins and needles. If it’s low it couod be causing that.

I got acupuncture privately for both and it really helped.

NoTouch · 06/06/2025 22:23

Omeprazole worked for me after a few weeks but be careful of long term use as it can cause B12 deficiency which causes nerve damage. I am on B12 injection now to try reverse the damage omeprazole did over 8 years.

I was able to eventually come off omeprazole when I lost significant weight.

Gavison advance recommended by pp is good. Make sure you get the advance one, not the double action. The advance one is thicker and creates a stronger raft to keep the acid down.

Mummy9431 · 06/06/2025 22:24

Thank you everyone for your advice and tips I will definitely be trying all of these, mainly starting with my diet. It looks like I’m going to have to take this abit more seriously and start managing the acid and the PPIs arnt working like they used to!

you’ve all calmed me down massively, as I was very worried!
thank you

I sat up when I saw these:

Pain in breastbone
Left hand swelling in night
Pins and needles in both arms while sleeping
chest pains
Shortness of breath

Theyre investigating me for these now- had had issues with stomach and chest and multiple scopes and all found all was ok, definitely not coeliac but when I ease off eg wheat and gluten life is a lot easier. they’re looking into the hand swelling and pins and needles being a separate thing, but nobody linked it to my stomach , they’ve done extra blood tests and am waiting for results. My hand is like a balloon at the moment. Very intriguing to see anyone else has had the same!!

Mummy9431 · 07/06/2025 07:44

@stayathomer i actually think the pins and needles and swelling isn’t linked to mine either, while pregnant I got both really bad and dr said carpal tunnel and it never really went away since having kids but I’ve just noticed it more while I’ve had these symptoms so I mentioned everything to the dr.

have you had the camera down the throat?
hope you get to the end of it soon, it’s awful!

This is similar to me. My brain always thinks of the worst thing it could be then I have talk myself out of it. Anyway, I get the pain in the middle of my throat, sometimes sore to swallow, sore to burp, acid has caused me to almost choke when I have been sleeping and after that episode my throat was very sore for a couple of days afterwards.

I had to stop eating late at night and no fizzy or high fat foods. I’m still trying to work out other foods that are making it worse.

GP has now put me on omeprazole but I don’t want to be on it long term.

im overweight and I think it would probably help if I lost a couple of stone.

hattie43 · 07/06/2025 07:48

I had / have all these except pins and needles and following a gastroscopy last month have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and mild gastritis. I tell you it doesn’t feel mild but through diet I’ve managed with only the off gaviscon tablet .

stayathomer · 07/06/2025 09:40

Mummy9431

was asleep for camera down throat, no after effects or anything, felt nothing! She said carpel tunnel too, but looked that up and it just seems like a go to answer, the other doctor said after this she might see if we’d do eg ct etc. she then said maybe it’s arthritis but I know for that you need to get an ultrasound and she didn’t mention it. To be honest I’ll see how it all goes but I may end up just living with it and hoping that doesn’t come back to bite me😅 Best of luck with it all, hope it all gets easier💖

stayathomer · 07/06/2025 09:46

Ps just putting it out there to see if it helps anyone but my random list of things that kill my stomach and cause eg the heart flutters are vitamin c fizzy tablet thingies, 7up, Fanta and to a lesser extent coke, malteasers, more than one or two slices a day of white bread, croissants (cries as I love them!), weetabix and corn flakes (I have rice crispies or an egg and avocado now for breakfast). That’s pretty much the entirety so far, I stay away from this stuff and I’m pretty much fine

Mummy9431 · 07/06/2025 11:44

Yeah I think it’s definitely acid reflux causing all the issues.
im 99.9% sure it’s not a stomach ulcer, I’ll be very shocked if that is what the camera shows.

i need to change what i drink because i love coffee and Coke Zero.
ive had the camera once a few years ago and i think having it again will put my mind at ease as to what the hell is going on.
thanks for everyone’s comments :)
