Tonsilitis and fever

I'm on day 5 of clarithromycin for tonsilitis and still feel so rough and still have a fever. Before that I was on penicillin for 5 days which did absolutely nothing. I am a bit mystified and am now waiting a call from GP. I have a swollen gland on one side so a bit concerned about a cyst. Trying not to do any other googling. I have had tonsilitis before which has cleared straight away with penicillin. Any similar experiences?

Yes I've had similar and unfortunately needed a&e treatment with steroids and IV antibiotics, pain relief and fluids. I did 4 days of penicillin which wasn't working only getting worse, changed to clarithromycin and took it for 3 days again continued to get worse to the point I couldn't swallow my own saliva. Please if things aren't working don't be afraid to go to a&e, they should take it seriously as they did for me.

OP, Are you able to swallow, take fluids, are you passing urine?
If so, keep up fluids, ice lollies are good, soluble aspirin 300mg, 4-6 hourly, gargle and swallow; NB. Do not take soluble Aspirin with Ibuprofen...but you can take Paracetamol with it, assuming you have no contraindications to taking anti-inflammatories, ie elderly, renal impairment, gastric issues...

If you start drooling, straight to A&E. Quinsey is uncommon but can occur.

What is your temperature?

10 days on, it should be starting to improve on the back of Penicillin and clarithro'

Best of luck, so, so grim. X

Just back from GP. He took a temp of 38.5 so I've had a fever for 8 days straight. Eurghh. He reckons the infection is penicillin-resistant so got worse in that time. Usual lecture about antibiotic resistance. However my throat definitely looks better today (day 5 of clarithromycin) so he thinks its working. I still feel terrible but am drinking and eating etc. Tonsilits is truly awful.

@Realisation14 that sounds horrendous. Point noted.

Poor old you; but it's reasurring that GP thinks the Clarithro' is working...just a matter of time, hopefully...Tonsillitis is UTTERLY awful!
Are you gargling then swallowing the soluble aspirin? It's magic for tonsillitis.

Don't worry too much about your swollen lymph gland; it's par for the course in nasty sore throats/earache/ dental problems, even infected Excema on her head can elicit this, it'll subside when the infection goes, although they can persist for even a few weeks after the original infection has improved. It's your body's way of helping to fight infection.

If I have tonsillitis now it’s resistant to penicillin so they always put me straight on another antibiotic
