I have had this on my big toe for about 3 years and it really gets me down in summer as I no longer wear sandals or flip flops as it is so unsightly even with varnish! Does anyone have any remedies that work? Doctor prescribed some paint on solution which didn't work and I have tried vicks vapo rub also without success. All suggestions welcome!

White iodine every day without fail until the nail grows out.

How long have you used Vicks? I have tried everything over the years ( though not the prescribed medication which I gather is good)Nothing has worked as well as Vicks….( though it took months before I saw a difference )It doesn’t get rid of it completely but keeps it at bay…. If I stop using it gets worse…. If I am religious about using it it gets smaller and smaller. I keep a tub by my bed…

I’m using Amorolfine recommended by a podiatrist. It is a slow process can take 12 months. I started the process last year but stopped over the winter. Decided got to get it sorted. Been recommended to use it twice a week been doing this for a few weeks and I can see new clear nail at the bottom. I have a few nails to sort but determined to follow the plan and have 3 boxes of Amorolfine to make sure I have plenty in.

You have to file and paint the stuff on repeatedly for months, is does work but you have to be consistent long term.

Gemstonebeach · 01/06/2025 10:12

I had in the corner of one big toe and middle toe. On big toe I would cut out corner and middle toe was so badly affected that it would basically peel off. Then painted with solution and rubbed anti fungal cream into whole foot.

Twelvetimes · 01/06/2025 10:22

I bought the paint on stuff from Amazon (Scholl brand) and it worked really well. As @Holly485 says you have to be consistent, painting and filing regularly for months but it did work.

I always wore nail varnish but that provides the ideal conditions for fungus to grow and spread so I rarely wear it now. If I do wear it, it's just for a week or two then I remove it. So I'd stop with the nail varnish.

Does Nail Polish Cause Fungus?

Nail polish causes fungus by trapping moisture under the nail and creating a damp environment where fungi thrive and increases the risk of infection.

About a year applying twice a day, it did have a limited effect but the whole nail was still covered. Thanks for the suggestions, will give the iodine a try next

My GP told me the treatments you paint on often don't work and they can prescribe anti-fungal tablets for 3m. You need to have a test of your liver function, so sounds quite full on.

Bananajam · 01/06/2025 20:25

I know its not ideal for everyone but I have been taking Terbinafine for nail fungus and I feel confident in wearing sandals that show my toes. I've tried every method but nothing worked. I've taken the tablets for 3 months and my nails look healthy with no sign of infection. My bloods are fine.
I was told to use Clotrimazole cream daily to treat any athletes foot and go barefoot as often as possible. I know its scary taking such a strong treatment but after years of trialling everything else with no significantdifference, finally the tablets have worked and I'm happy.

Officepicture · 01/06/2025 20:31

@Bananajam that is interesting, how long will you need to take them for?

I've had the end of my big toe being fungal for years after I damaged the nail by dropping something on it.

I tea tree oiled it every day for years combined with paint on stuff. Never worked

Last 3 months I've lasered it with my lumea once a week and finally seen some improvement.

Mumsworkneverdone · 01/06/2025 20:35

Malt vinegar (one for fish and chipd) daily soaked in paper towell then applied worked for me and did for my mum!

Bananajam · 01/06/2025 20:36

I'll continue until I've finished the tablets I have now and see, if I get any signs of the fungus returning then I'll start them again. I will have been on it four months in total. I was told it can take up to 12 months so I am keeping a close eye on things!
Good luck, its amazing the difference when you're confident showing your feet!

I had these. The only thing that worked. Obviously still took about a year, even when sorted to finally grow out completely

Tenducks · 01/06/2025 20:38

It dawned on me this year that my big toe nail had fungus when it became brown and orange and thick and ridged. I’d thought it was just from exercise or something.
Anyway I bought paint on stuff that peels off and can be painted over. Excilor. It’s working.
I use a nail file to rough up the surface and paint it on every day after my shower.

Two months in and it’s SO much better. Nail is growing back normally but will probably have to grow out the discolouration. I like that I can put varnish on if I want to wear open shoes. It’s only one toe to do as the others are already painted!

Topjoe19 · 01/06/2025 20:40

I've been having success with tea tree oil. Also gehwol oil from amazon & lamisil athletes foot cream.

Bobbybobbins · 01/06/2025 21:32

Tea tree oil worked for me. I can never wear nail polish on my toes though as it immediately comes back.

Notaflippinclue · 20/10/2025 20:18

Radio 4 16th October full investigation, very interesting but no real solution!

AllTheWorldIsGreen · 20/10/2025 20:47

Scholl athlete’s foot cream (terbinafine) fixed mine. They’d been grim for at least 30 years. I have real toenails on my little toes for the first time in years!
