Is this just acid reflux?

I have a hiatus hernia and have struggled with reflux for many years. Recently I have had new pain in the upper stomach area, below my lower left ribs. It feels really tender when I press the area, like the whole area is inflamed or something. It's an uncomfortable niggling pain pretty much all the time. Moving around seems to make it worse and sometimes when I laugh or cough it feels like my stomach is popping out from under my ribs or catching on them.

It's been going on for a few weeks now. I'm mainly worried that this new pain is something else and not reflux related but I think that's my anxiety getting the better of me. The acid in throat feeling is noticeably worse and my voice is starting to go funny at times. This has seemingly got a lot worse since starting the mini pill (desogestrel) about 8 weeks ago. I have famotidine so trying that but it doesn't seem to be doing much thus far. Only been a few days though.

PPI's don't agree with me at all, I've tried omeprazole and lansoprazole, both had awful side effects and if anything made the issue worse. Famotidine seems to have less side effects but unsure if it's helping much. Debating whether to just stop the mini pill as well and see what happens as I'm feeling pretty miserable with it all.

I have recently had a hiatus hernia diagnosed and the main symptom was pain / tenderness under the left breastbone . The hernia was actually found to be on my oesophagus and I was told it’s related pain . I only really feel it if I’ve eaten too much sweet stuff .

Have you had an endoscopy?

It was for the OP but yes, also you! I asked because I recently had one and it showed a lot of inflammation from the acid reflux and there’s not much they could offer to help which is frustrating.

Agreed , the consultant just said keep taking PPI’s as needed . Apparently if an hernia gets really problematic they can operate but I don’t think that’s their chosen remedy.

@hattie43 thanks, I think it probably is the hernia. Will see how I go with famotidine.
