Please bare with me, this is a little bit long.
In Dec I started to feel breathless at rest, dizzy, heart pals etc. Then took ferrous fumerate 2 x day after GP said it was due to low Hb and ferritin. Fast forward to now. Dizziness gone, heart pals gone but breathlessness is still there, although less so. I stopped the iron 1 month ago as it did give me stomach ache. For information I've been on Lansaprazole for past month due to GERD.

What I've noticed recently is sometimes slightly tinging hands, feet, strange feeling on cheek etc. All mild but noticeable. Mild breathlessness at rest continues.

Had recent bloods, all normal, except ferritin needs to be repeated due to issue with the sample ( and that's the test I wanted to know).

My question is can vit D level of 38, a folate of 5 or b12 of 373 cause any of the above symptoms , including my breathlessness? I know these are all in range but possibly lower end of normal..

Gp doesn't seem too concerned.

No health conditions. Had cardio checked out. 42 years old, possibly perimenopause.

Thank you.

That vit d isn't normal. With low vit d I had the sores bones, couldn't even put my head down on the pillow level of pain. The low folate is what your symptoms are saying to me, I've had that several times sadly.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2025 15:55

My vit D was 43 on a recent test

I started the vit Dbsiray and it sorted a lot of my feeling generally unwell.

For a lot of things one persons lower than normal can be another’s cause of horrid symptoms. I learned that from MN!!!

i also had a lot of muscle twitching.

I’ve stopped it daily now Sun has come out but take a spray a few times a week and so far all has remained ok but I’ve not had a repeat blood test to check it as it was an incidental finding in the first place - but I doubt co incidental some of those symptoms stopped after I started taking the supplement.

Abs811 · 29/05/2025 09:48

@BoarBrush can you please tell me what symptoms you had with low folate? Although it looks like my folate level are within range albeit on the lower end. I hope all your issues have resolved now

@itsgettingweird what symptoms did you have with low vid D? The strange nerve sensations and breathlessness scares me the most

I used to get really bad tingling and pain and itching in my legs and feet. I'd scratch them raw, and they were always freezing.
Since I started taking a multivitamin and folic acid the symptoms have totally stopped.
Maybe try forceval and folate?

worldwidetravel2017 · 29/05/2025 10:53

I take 1000 iu vit d daily
.
I also make sure i regularly eat iron rich & vit c rich foods

Apricots - 8 dried apricots a day
And regular eggs & regular broccoli can help feretin

I felt horrendous when feretin & vit d was low

Abs811 · 29/05/2025 13:36

@BobbyBiscuits @worldwidetravel2017 can I ask what your folate, vit D and ferritin levels were when you had these symptoms?

.
Feretin was 7

Oneearringlost · 29/05/2025 14:29

You're not overbreathing, are you?

The tingling in limbs and around the mouth, with your breathlessness can be very typical of this. ( Test re-breathing into a paper bag, SLOWLY! and see if the symptoms subside).

It is very common not to be aware of over breathing at all and is commonly missed in favour of more concrete symptoms.

All the best.

I don't know the numbers but sadly I was hospitalised due to very poor nutrition. I went on a drip for magnesium and the banana bag. And all the b vitamins, folate etc. I still take the folate and vitamins at home and have felt so much better. But my case is an extreme one.

Devilsmommy · 29/05/2025 15:11

I've got low folate and low vit d and also get that breathless feeling all the time

Yes the doctor told me that today so am getting some as I'm already on folic acid for the low folate. Does it really make such a big difference? I really hope so 😅

Well I’ve been suffering Custer headaches and the blood tests were to check general health and hormones.

But I generally had whole body tiredness and lots of pins and needles which I put down to lack of sleep (cluster headaches are soul destroying)

But vit D was lower than ideal.

still suffer the cluster headaches but the tiredness and pins and needles have almost gone.

It does
Could take 4 - 6 weeks to feel difference but it does

Has your b12 been tested

BeachRide · 29/05/2025 16:17

My folate was 0.3 once. I could feel ants crawling under the skin of my hands - yuck!

worldwidetravel2017 · 29/05/2025 16:11

Yeah it was.

and ferritin and TSH and FSH.

Ferritin was 4 a few years ago before I had my hysterectomy but it’s 54 now 😇

54 could stilll do with being a bit higher tho

NHS ranges are so wide

Lotsa consultants like it to be 80 - 100

When mine was 179 due to lotsa eggs and lotsa dried apricots - they were happy

Feretin , vit d , b12 all need to be higher

Try eating regular dried apricots - 8 a time.
Eggs
Broccoli
Wheat abix

Try 1000 iu vit d daily

Abs811 · 18/08/2025 07:25

@Lilxa89 sorry to hear this, this sounds a lot like I feel. My tingling I mentioned has gone but I still get skipped beats and it's the breathlessness at rest (on and off, it's not everyday) and feeling weak somedays bothers me the most.

Do you feel like the iron is working?
