Verticle black lines on toe nails

Danny46811 · 27/05/2025 09:30

I've noticed that I have verticle black lines on my smallest toe nails of both feet, as well as on a couple of my other toe nails. I have terrible HA and google tells me its melanoma! Currently waiting to see GP about this next week but in the meantime can anyone talk me down. Google says it could also be autoimmune disease which I don't have or vitamin deficiencies. My Vit D is at 38 (so a bit low) and I'm also low in Hb and ferritin. Not sure if it's that though. Has anyone had these on multiple toe nails where it isn't some terrible disease?

could just be bruising from shoes being too tight

@bloodredfeaturewall thanks for responding, I guess it could be but it doesn't go in the summer when I wear flip flops

I think just little burst blood vessels under the nail?

Danny46811 · 27/05/2025 10:26

@heavenisaplaceonearth I'd think that if it was on one toenail but it's on around 4, which makes me wonder if this is more a systemic issue

Or you kicked or tripped on something weeks ago and it’s taken this long to grow up the nail.

I'm no expert but think it would be odd to have multiple melanomas appear on separate toe nail beds but nowhere else?! Do they look like the fairly solid black lines that is sometimes how melanoma appears under a nail?

I had this on my big toes, looks v odd, doesn't it.
I wouldn't worry about it being cancerous though, as its on both feet.

I do agree. The lines aren't as black as they appear in pics, more like grey/brown. On some of the toes they are a bit hard to see.
I read that the lines can be due to dark complexion and I have very dark skin (from south Indian origin)..

That's made me feel a bit better as I don't know anyone who had them on both feet, most people have it on just one toenail...agreed it's odd

Yeah, think it's with being on my feet all day and maybe ill fitting shoes. It's bruising under toenail. Mines gone now but took ages.
The chances of having bilateral cancer on both feet are probably 100 billion to one ( rough estimate 😂)
If your still worried I would see treatment room nurse

Ps, I'm whiter than white and mines looked almost black so don't think your skin tone is the reason 😂
