DD has had a temperature since Sun evening. At 5 o clock yesterday it was 40.1 (digital thermometer in ear) so we whipped to the GP. She said it was a throat infection and gave her amoxycillin.

She's had 3 doses now but she's getting hotter again. I just took her temp again and it was even higher (40.4)

She's hot and grizzly and her eyes look heavy but she's still quite bright and with it.

I've given her ibruprofen and I'll take her temp again in a bit. Shouldn't the ABs have kicked in by now?

Would you ring out of hours GP/ go to A&E/ wait and see?

My sons temp always goes over 40 when ill, which is very often! He also turns blue in the face, which to begin with was very frightening but now I'm used to it. We've been to A&E a few times and they always admitted him to the wards for tests but its always been a virus.

I agree some children just struggle to control their temp. My son is large for his age so I need to give him more than the recommended dose of Calpol and Ibuprofen as the hospital actually bases doses on weight not age. Sometimes 1ml extra is enough to control the temp. I think its the sudden changes in temp that are the worry ie. if it suddenly goes up to 40. It helps to keep curtains closed with windows open as apparently this cools temp of room! Although obvious try not to cuddle them too much as your body heat will heat them even more (v hard with poorly child!).
