This is what I was just told by my go surgery. Has anyone any knowledge of this? 7 seems extremely low to me

No, it’s not normal. Well normal maybe but not optimum
it needs to be over 70 ish for hair growth

Where I live it’s something like 15 but that’s pretty low! Mine is almost always under 10 ☹️

I don't know what it is officially where I live, but my GP said 'most women feel better when it's over 50' and prescribed me some iron tablets.

Do iron tablets not help to increase it?

It's possibly within the normal range according to whatever reference range they are using (reference range at my surgery is 11-314) - but it's definitely sub optimal. Do you know the reference range they're using?

As a previous poster said, ferritin needs to be at least 50 for hair growth, and preferably at least 70. Though I don't know what your issues are, perhaps it's not hair issues you're concerned about.

According to the NHS Clinical Knowledge Summary for iron deficiency, the cut off is 30, regardless of the reference range used by the lab.

Google it!

7 is low, mine is currently 2.8 (which apparently is very, very low) and I've been prescribed iron tablets by my GP. Havent started taking them yet so cant confirm how well they work. You can buy them over the counter but I don't think they are strong enough

Oldglasses · 21/05/2025 09:42

@redundant2 My hair grows like a weed and my ferritin is always borderline or low according to the levels (has been as low as 11 and I've got it up to 48 I think recently but I ate a lot of iron/vit c rich foods).

Ellephanting · 21/05/2025 09:54

Mine was 25. I’m now on iron tablets. 7 is way too low.

This. My GP said about 80 for hair growth (mine thinned badly with menopause and looking back, a poor diet). At the time mine was around 50 and classed as 'normal'. She put me on iron tablets and they did help along with a better diet and taking multi vitamins.

Iron tablets would raise my levels to maybe high teens/low twenties (started out at 2)
